Yeah, they should do an international appeal, kinda like Oxfam - 'For $5/£5 a month you too can save a n00b'

Way to pwn

Honestly though, you must have a lot of patience to set up and troubleshoot such a rig. I'm heavily lacking in that department. I can't look @ Orthos for more than an hour and call it quits.

I talked it up and he offered it to me for 400... I am tempted, but honestly, he will not get it in his head as to what it is worth. Feeling bad about it, but curious as well. Dunno if I want to spend 4 bills on an ES model either...
That's a gamble for sure. I had poor luck with my ES Penryn.. it popped under what I though was safe voltage...$400 is cheap for that processor BTW...

If you guys are worried about money then this sort of Extreme set up is not something to consider. If you are worried about how I spend my money get a life. If you have money and want a killer gaming set up I still would say wait for Nehalem.

If you want a Dual Socket server board that you can OC this is the set up to get. My Xeons at 2.9 are performing on par with a Q6600 at 3.2 or so. $375 for a Server chip is reasonable IMO. Server chips get the best slice off the wafer and are meant to run at load all the time. I plan to use this as my long term Folding rig and do not have any plans to upgrade Black Knight in the forseeable future. So for me it works. I don't see it as a waste of money...but I do think the expectations set by other reviewers were unreasonable: hence my "Harsh Review" to put this back into perspective.

Thanks LK.

Once I got over the hype I actually like the set up a lot: it is fast as stink. I am pulling 21K+ in Cinebench R10 which is no mean feat. I would like to see how it works as a video encoder and so on..which is where DP workstations shine.

I have been looking at DP boards for years...but the inability to OC has put me off. The only way this could be better is if it were S775 which is never going to happen.

I fiddled with the SB cooler a bit and was able to make it somewhat more quiet. Th shroud is some sort of Polyethylene and quite flexible: I just pulled it away from the fan blades and it helped.

I have a chipset cooler ariving in a few days for the MCH and I am talking with a block smith about getting a SB cooler milled right now.

Yes it is. But then again it's about running at idle too

Even with a pair of HD3870X2 on it it still never spins up or even gets warm. The air coming out of it is only slightly above ambient.

Compared to the PC Power 1KW it is way quiet.

Yes. Just love the DA series PSU. It is hard to pick something else once I use it.

Yep I think the 750 would probably have worked fine...but WTH.

So the SB cooler is a go. A very talented metal worker (makes parts for Tomahawks) is going to make one for me...this might take a while...but it will be worth it...we are talking aerospace engineering quality
