My first build!! $400 not-quite gamer

Thread Starter
So i just ordered parts for my first build.!! yay! I am calling it a not-quite gamer because its fairly weak by todays standards but its all i need since i only play older games. I also plan to do some minor overclocking and upgrade video, cpu and hdd in a year or two.

Parts list (pics will be up when it arrives)

Everything was bought at ncix.ca

CPU: E2160 $75.99
MOBO: P35-DS3L $89.99
Case: CM RC-330 $47.73
RAM: G.Skill F2-6400CL5D $49.99
GPU: EVGA 8600gt ssc $108.88
Optical: Samsung SH-S203B $25.99

Im recycling my psu, hard drive, keyboard, mouse and screen.
Total was 437.71 with tax and shipping.

What do you guys think? Not too shabby for a rig thats mainly going to be used for school right? I just hope dentistry doesn't have any need for a high power rig

O btw its my 18th birthday present! March 16 ftw!

Everything is great except for the 8600 - would've been better to get a 9600 if you had the money to spare.

I still prefer the 8800GT/GTS512's for the $200+ range

Other than that nice build

(What are the specs on your PSU by the way? Gotta make sure it can power that thing )

thats the only concern i had as well, i would recommend a good 500 watt psu for this build. other than that looks good, should do really well. It is more of a jack of all trades computer which is good. Kinda like mine. And like Leck said, the 9600 is a nice option right now for a tight budget gaming rig if that is what you want

I strongly considered either a 9600gt or 3850 but they both stretched the budget by a little too much. I know its not quite good enough for modern games (at full settings) but I do plan on upgrading the video and cpu in the future.

I was given $400 by my parents and anything else comes out of my pocket so I just couldn't justify an extra $70-$100 just for games.

My psu is a 500w Coolmax unit. I read quite a few bad reviews on it but it seems that if it isn't d.o.a. (which it wasnt) then it should last me a nice long time.

I believe most of the defective coolmax units were all in the same batch. If it hasnt died yet, keep holding your breath. You never know when it could go out.

UPDATE TIME!!!!!

Everything showed up today!

I have two questions.
1: do i build the rig outside the case irst to check if everything works or should i just go ahead and build it in the case right away?

2: Im recycling my old hard drive. Should i format it before placing in new computer or can I use it as is?

1. Setting up outside the case is not a bad idea though I don't really find it necessary. Install the board carefully and you should be fine.

2. I would recommend formatting the HD.

Great build by the way. Prolly the best possible parts for the money.

Awesome! thanks for the advice and especially for the praise.I must admit I was a little worried that not getting at least a 3850 was going to be a big hit but seeing as how im only going to be doing light gaming at 1280x1024 I realized that my choice was best. Also the e2160 overclocks like mad so its all good.!!1
