Hi all,
Would just like to get your knowledgable opinions.
Heres the story-
My IDE backup drive kept spinning down whilst in windows (a bit of a problem as pagefile and temp files were on it).
Eventually it disappeared all together - not recognised in BIOS or windows...I thought great there goes another hard-drive.
My IDE dvd-writer was still acessable though.
So I get another cable try that...still a problem.
Then I try changing the jumpers around so that the HDD is slave and dvd drive is master. In this case the HDD is perfectly accessable but the DVD drive is not.
So I swapped out the HDD and DVD drive for two different IDE hard drives I luckily had hanging around...Same problem....Slave is visible, Master is not visible in either windows or BIOS. (This also happens with a single drive set to master.
I'm guesssing its the motherboard but can anyone suggest anything I haven't tried (And yes jumpers are absolutely correct).
Is it common for something on the mobo to fail and make the IDE drive not accessible when at master.
Thanks in advance

Isn't Cable Select the typical choice in one of these situations?

Make sure your master drive in the BIOS isn't disabled.

I did try cable select...still the master was 'not detected'. I even tried manually setting drive type in BIOS to 'hard drive' still no joy.
Thanks For Responding Though

Well, then I guess I would try an RMA. That is an odd problem. It does sound like the motherboard to me.

Do you have more than one IDE port on the board?

I voted to RMA it although it is asrock, by the way I despise my asrock board with a via chip set,
I would say if you get an RMa'ed board sell it and get a gigabyte or asus if you can

I hate ASRock too...in fact the boards end is nigh...its being replaced by a skt 775 abit ip35-e and e2180. But I want to sell it on ebay...and the noobs on there won't buy it if its faulty (ish). The abit isn't here yet though and a lack of a dvd drive is getting to me.

I won't vote but I would suggest to try reset your bios to defaults/clear cmos to see if it is just a bios setting. I don't think the controller would be bad as neither would show up. Have you tried other power connectors as well as the ide cable? And are you sure your jumpers are set properly? I always use the slave/master settings but cable select works fine as well.
