This is nowhere near enough information to help minor.

1) how are you connected to his lan, wireless or wired, if wired what are you connecting to (hub, switch, router, or PC).

2) are you trying to do this at his house, or over the internet.

3) whats the purpose of doing this (file sharing, or what?)

hit me up with more info and i'll help ya out

Ok. Please make sure that you are using a cross-over network cable. Straight cables do not work for this kind of connection. One you are connect with a cross-over, setup static IPs on the NIC, and from there you should be able to connect to the other computer. I can't recall if you need to set default gateway or something like that.

In most cases, it's really easier to use a spare router or switch, in your case a router would be plug and play.

All 1000BaseT NICs do not require crossover cables because they have Automatic MDI/MDI-X Configuration. A lot of older 100BaseT have it too.

Not knowing what NIC he has, he should try a crossover cable.
