Do I expect Linux to act like Windows? Yes. If Linux would like people to begin using it more that would probably be a good step towards success. Back to the language analogy....do you expect most English speaking people to learn Japanese? Not without a damn good reason. But I'd be more than willing to learn a language that had numerous benefits and was very similar to English, so easy to learn.

There need to be a huge amount of benefits to make an OS switch to begin with, and any large learning curve deterants, coupled with lack of support aren't going to help.
lol desktop Linux has changed a LOT since a couple of years ago...

And if you expected Linux to be windows - that's wishful thinking, especially for an enthusiast.

no problems with Vista yet, I like it, the UAC was a bit annoying, one thing I'd like is to have a remember my choice checkbox, so you don't have to allow the same program over and over, maybe there is one I haven't looked too far into it

I still have game issues with Vista. BF2 will randomly give a blue screen, or lock the system up. I've tried everything at stock, still, random unpredictable freezing. Gears of War still wont work, Dirt is having issues again, and Aero sometimes does strange things when entering or leaving a game. Otherwise, I'm perfectly happy with Vista. It did take some getting used to. For instance, I didn't know that the Program Files folder is now security protected, so certain programs didn't work at first..

So other than the price of Linux, what is the benefit of its use over something like Vista?

I think every office and public computer should use Linux. The price is obviously the #1 factor. Let me tell you a story:

I went to a brand new library that just opened near my house. They had a computer lab that has programs for 2 things: internet (including library catalog) and office (word processing/spreadsheet/presentation). I was very sad to see that each of the dell computers was using windows XP. For 2 functions, they pay that money to microsoft when Linux can provide those services at no cost with Firefox and OpenOffice. I hung my head in shame.

So you are asking the wrong question... The question you should be asking is, "what is the benefit of vista over Linux?" It's not a rhetorical question; there are various answers, and they all depend on the user. If you're a gamer, you'll want to use windows. If you do word processing/office work and internet browsing, Linux does that work just fine for $0. If you need commercial software that is available only on windows, then obviously you're going to need windows as the solution to your problem (it's a shame that there isn't much commercial software for Linux).

For most users, Linux would be perfect. And public computers, such as those at libraries, should run Linux.

Glad to see that most people here like Vista. Obviously there were some problems in the beginning, but it's all good now!

Of course I also like Linux. Different things for different uses. Like programming vs gaming, lol.

I was skeptical at first, but wow, was I wrong. Works just as good as XP, but with nice extra touches, features and add-ons.

I was concerned about the move to Vista as well. I went as far as using a new HD so I could fall back on my XP drive. I started a thread about it and someone said to "install it and not look back". That's exactly what happened, I haven't plugged back in my XP drive since I installed Vista.

Everything
runs better on my system, I just had to do the Administrator trick and now it runs better than XP IMO. It's faster, has better graphics, and very nice features like AERO, Dreamscape and Media Center.

what is the administrator trick?
