Zalman expertise please

Thread Starter
I have just installed my Zalman 9700 (see system) and so far everything seems OK, temps look OK according to the threads I have looked at. Even though I was really confused about the install regarding the position of the clip holding the unit on and the reference to the "Retention Guide". The first install I aligned the clip lengthwise in the same direction as the air flow, but after tightening the screws I could still twist the fan some. I changed the clip to go through the tubes and it was better, but still could twist the fan some. I used the thermal grease and brush included and probably put too much on, this may be why I could move it, (also why there is the difference in temps between cores). So, what is the retention guide that the instructions are referring too? Thanks.

There will be some variation on the temperature of all the cores; this is completely normal and typically unavoidable. The Zalman heatsink does move a little when mounted, but try not to twist it too much or you'll make a mess of your thermal paste.

The Zalman 9500/9700 being twistable when mounted is normal, it does not cripple cooling in any way. Its a nice cooler have fun overclocking

Everything you describe is normal, especially the ability to still move the Zalman after being screwed down via the bracket. I must also point out that your temps are very good and your only using the supplied TIM wow.

G0's look much better, ok i'm overclocked to 3Ghz using 1.325v but i'm 10c higher than yours at idle. B3's are ****e.

Holy s**t, I hadn't noticed that!...must be some kinda misread because that's still about what I'm seeing.

Anyway, has any body got a comment on what the heck is the Retention Guide that Zalman refers to?

I don't understand what the diagram is looking for

EDIT: Is it which way the clip is laying down?
