I feel ya man, I just happen to be living in a 'rent-free' situation at the moment, and a job that's paying decent, so at least for now I have the luxury of a bit of splurging after MANY YEARS of being broke as a joke.

So, re: your friend, would you happen to know if he just 'tried' it, or did he seriously 'set his mind to it' (i.e. perhaps a bios mod), and not have any luck?

Thanks again for your input

The GTS and the GT might have the 92nm, and are both based on the G92 architecture. But they're different revision cores.

The cores have to be identical for SLI to work, flashing the BIOS won't do you any good.

As a side note, the clock speeds are determined by the BIOS, which is why you can SLI a (example) Factory overclocked GT and a non factory OC'd.

Fine, just go ahead and LAUGH AT ME!!!

U know WHAT?

That's it.

I'm asking Mavke.

If ANYONE knows, it's that guy.

I'll let y'all know what He says about this subject.

Thanks everyone ...

AHA!

Now THERE is an answer that makes sense to me as to why it wouldn't work.

Thank you.

I already posted to MVKTech, so I expect they'll say the same thing. I'll be sure to report back when I hear something from there.

Man, all that back and forth over NOTHING ...

Fry's accepted my 8800gt back (42 days old) w/o any hassle. I had to take store credit but that was MORE than great with me.

I happily left with my bfg 8800gts OC that cost me $10 (before my $30 rebate) vs. the 8800GT that I'd bought onsale for $249.

Took it home and OC'd the living crap out of it, and all I can say is WOW. I really didn't expect it to do too much better than my bios volt-modded 8800gt, but it DEFINITELY does, especially on shaders and memory. I'm assuming it's a combination of higher voltage(s) and the better cooling system.

One thing I find interesting about this card is how closely my max overclocks tracked with the fan speed I was setting. The cooling is MOST definitely a limiting factor on this card. By setting the fan speed to 80%, I was able to achieve a max stable overclock of 810/1944/1145 (vs. the 738/1792/1030 on the ol' GT). With this I finally broke 40FPS average on the Crysis bench with all settings on High at 1680x1050. So that was a happy occasion.

All in all, I'm a very happy camper, especially for what I paid. Paying full pop for a GTS, however, based on the numbers I'm seeing and current pricing, makes little sense to me at this point. ESPECIALLY if you're not going to overclock it. Cause that is where this card shines, really.

ANother matter of interest, if you set the same clocks on the GTS and a 8800GT, the difference between them is pretty negligible. Seems the extra shader power alone buys MAYBE 150 points on 3dmark06. Unless I'm getting cpu limitation on the GPU part of the test, I would have to say that the 256-bit memory bus and/or the 16 ROPS holds these 8800 512's back a little bit from what they'd otherwise be capable of.

And it seems to me this also applies when overclocking ... put it this way, I've had a number of other cards that scale a bit better with the overclocking I've done on them than the 8800GTS does. The 7900GS being a prime example of a card that, if you overclocked it 20%, ALL your scores went up by 20% (except overall 3d06, of course). I'm not seeing as close of a tracking with the overclocking on the 8800GTS, hence my speculation about ROP's/bandwidth.

Fortunately, there's lot of room to compensate for the memory bandwidth on these cards with raw clock speed on the memory. I about crapped myself when I had my mem up at 2290, seeing NO freezing nor artifacts. I decided not to even try pushing higher, that was just crazy to me.

I've decided to run daily at 756/1890/1099 @50% fan speed, we'll see how that goes for awhile here. Pushing it higher just doesn't seem worth the risk to me, it doesn't have that much payoff that I could see...

I believe the sale is still on (ENDS TODAY) at Fry's if anyone out on the West Side is interested ... A $229 BFG 8800GTS OC 512 after $30 MIR? Are you kidding me? Time for any remaining 7 series laggers to make that move!
