...Wow. For a good set (2 speakers) he should be spending at least 150 dollars. Do me a favor and don't buy ANY car audio equipment from unauthorized resellers. If something goes wrong, and chances are it will, the manufacturer will not honor the warranty if the product was purchased from an unauthorized reseller. I learned this the hard way and have had many bad experiences with my car stereo.

After owning JVC, Sony, Pioneer, Kenwood, and Alpine head units over the years, I'd *strongly* recommend an Alpine. They're reliable and easy to use, which is key when you're driving. You can get a great one for ~$150 from Crutchfield. And, by all means, stay away from Kenwood...they skip sooooo easily. I've had the bass from my sub cause the CD to skip while sitting at a stop light.

Crutchfield's head unit prices aren't bad because they come with all of the necessary adaptors and such that you'd have to pay an extra $20-40 for at any car stereo shop.

For speakers, go around to some different shops and listen to them. You can say any given brand of speakers is really good (there are lots of good brands and models) but the real test is how they sound to you. So, bring a couple of CDs that you like to listen to and go to some different shops and play your music on them. That way you can get a feel for what's going to sound good for your music preference.
