call up M$ and tell them that you've been getting the rrod more and more. But it's not consistent. Sometimes you can let it sit for 5-8 hrs and it starts up, other times it does not.

i did this with mine, since thats what it was doing. They sent out the shipping box and i got a different one back within 2 weeks.

make sure the warranty sticker is still in one piece.

This is one of the reasons I got the instore warranty for my 360, because if something non rrod comes up I can just return it and get a new one

I love Sams club. I bought a 360 about a year after it came out and I started to get problems. Took it to Sams with a receipt and paid $50 more for the Elite version. I have to admit black makes everything look better .

yeah the extended 3 year warrentee only applys to the RROD everything else is 90 day. just curious did he have it vertical or laying flat when the disks were scraching? i know standing the console upright is never good for it. oh and did/does make noise when you swich from a game to dashboard?

here is two links from xbox.com that might help you out with warrentee questions.

Yeah I would do the getting RRROD and if you get it back with the same DVD drive ring up and say the dvd drive stopped working when they sent it back. Its a bit dodgy but they should last more then 2 years

Meh, personally I'd just camp ebay for a working drive of the same revision. Only bump you'd run into if it wasn't the same revision is you would have to extract your drive's key from the broken drive, and write it to the new one. You *can* brick a drive doing it that way if you don't do it right, so I HIGHLY reccomend getting a drive of the same exact revision. For example, mine is a Hitachi-LG 0047-DJ. I would want the same exact model to replace it..

The quick and dirty facts on replacing a drive with another drive of the same revision is this: Take it apart enough to only remove the firmware board (the board that the custom power cable and sata cable plug into). Do this CAREFULLY. You'll have to do it for both drives. Once both firmware boards are out, swap them and put both back together.. Now assuming you can remember which drive was the new one, install that drive into your 360. At this point you *should* have your old firmware board on the new drive. It's EXTREMELY important, because a 360's DVD firmware board is what is locked to your 360's motherboard (via that key I talked about earlier).

Anyway, the reason that drive had the issues you described is probably due to a dying motor. The 360 doesn't (or at least didn't with the early dashboard versions) spin down the discs often.. The dying motor first caused issues with reading games, then later it probably got to the point where it was a lot more sesitive to bumps-- hence scratched discs. I guess you could just replace the motor in that scenario, but swapping firmware boards is quicker, and you'll be taking those out anyway to get to the motor.

I can't really reccomend to you to call up MS and get it replaced, because the 3 year warranty WAS just for RRODs... Technically, wouldn't that be fraud?.. In any case, they might have changed the warranty terms since I last checked, so do your research. Whatever you end up doing is your decision.
