Low Framerates on 3850 :(

Thread Starter
Hi all.

Firstly, I'm pretty much a dunce when it comes to the technical side of things. I can just about find my way around a motherboard, but my knowledge is limited beyond that.

Basically, I was running my system using an old nvidia 7300gs and 1gb of RAM. I was playing the odd game of Battlefield 2 on low settings, and wow on medium, with really low fps (around 16 fps in cities)

I recently purchased a HD 3850 in the hope of being able to play these games with nice clean framerates. I've also upgraded my RAM to 2GB.

The problem is, Im still not getting very good framerates at all. In cities on wow, Im only getting around 24fps, and on lotro (very high settings) Im getting around 30fps, often dropping right down to around 9fps.

Im not after the best gaming rig out there, but just want something that will allow me to enjoy these games, lag-free. Surely with my current set-up, I should be expecting more from wow, due to its small requirements?

System :

OS: Microsoft Windows XP SP2
DX: Direct X 9
CPU: DualCore Intel Pentium D 805 2666MHz (20x133)
Mobo: Asus p5rd2-vm
Mem: 2048 DDR2
GPU: ATI Radeon HD 3850 (256mb)

When I installed the ATI Catalyst drivers, I made sure i unistalled the old forceware drivers first, and ran Driver Cleaner.

Any help here is greatly, greatly appreciated

No haven't tried overclocking as I havent a clue what to do, but it has crossed my mind to do some research on it.
But Im pretty sure that I should be getting much better results in a game as minimal as wow

You really need to use Driver Cleaner Pro when changing video cards especially when going from Nvidia to ATI or vise versa.

thats strange, cuz in cities on everything MAX 1600x1200 res

in WOW i get 65FPS+

and in BF2 all on MAX i get 80-100+FPS.

I would also say: use Driver Cleaner pro. If all possible do a fresh install of windows xp
and go get these Drivers

Xtreme G Warcat 8.1 XP 32bit

They work Awesome. for me atleast.

And with the current update on WOW, they made it so the game takes more from the CPU then the GPU and is now dual core optimized. so IMO, if you overclock your Pentium D 805 (2.66Ghz) to ~ 2.75-3Ghz you should see an improvement,

hope this helps

You seriously are in need of a new motherboard and processor... they are way more outdated than the rest of your comp, and probably the cause of your frame issues. That card should be able to max all those games at stock.

1280x1024 is a very low resolution, and at this resolution there is a MAJOR bottleneck between your CPU and GPU.

You should look at getting a conroe or a kentsfield in the near future IMHO.

(Also when/if you grab that new motherboard/CPU, you should reformat your windows to avoid problems)
