What should i do with it since i dont wanna pay the subscription fee.......is there a way i can use it w/out paying?

im pretty sure even for it to transfer to your tv you have to be paying some kind of subscription. You most definitely have to be paying to use any features it offers.

The boxes themselves are useless without the fee, I know I have 3 in a closet. I don't know about doing anything about installing another OS on it, never tried, probably again some sort of warranty with the tivo tho. Try whatever, report back if you get anything to work!

Well... not totally. You can make a Tivo out of a computer. If you put Linux on it, I know you can find sites that offer free TV show times.
A quick google search of "making your own personal PVR" yielded ByoPvr.com, which is a forum that shows Free and otherwise PVR (Personal Video Recorder) software and hardware.
I know you can replace their HDD's, so have fun trying to Mod it.

You can still use it without a subscription. You just won't get the channel guide information. And then you can program it by date/time rather than selecting actual shows to record.

Honestly, the $12/mo isn't bad. I love Tivo so much, I have 2 of 'em.
