Laptop + Audiophile = Possible?

Ok, so I'm going to invest in a laptop next month and I want it to have the ability to produce some awesome sound. Besides foobar and stuff

is there any laptop/attactment that can produce x-fi quality [not saying much]
or higher? price, under 250$ please. unless it's built into the laptop which i doubt.

ps. already thinking about an xmod.

How about a USB external Sound Blaster 24Bit? Its under $50.

Your path would do best with a USB DAC as your source.

Perhaps the best portable option in your price range is the iBasso D1 DAC/Amp. It has an optical input that you could take advantage of in case USB isn't your thing.

For a non-portable solution, the E-MU 0404 USB would also be a good choice. I've heard that the iBasso and E-MU are pretty much equal in terms of quality, but the iBasso can have its opamps rolled to really make the DAC portion shine.

i've checked out the ibasso before and it looks nice, so you say it connects via USB? the thing will mostly used at my home, but i will use it at school so i'd perfer portable.

but ack, i'm not cultured much in the way of DAC's, would you say it produces a better affect then an external sound card like the xmod or the external soundblaster ?

An external DAC will be miles better than the Xmod or any external "sound card" (per se) that I know of. I'd go with the EMU 0404, its sort of portable and I've heard it is amazing for the price. Aura can back me up on that, I believe s1arrah has one too.

Absolutely. Both the iBasso and E-MU will crush any external soundcard. Heck, they crush modded X-Fi Platinums .

Really it comes down to how badly you are looking for portability.

USB DAC

You could also look into the iBasso D2, $200. USB DAC and Amp, just like the D1. If you're going to get a D2 get it now though, only the first 100 purchased from iBasso will have DIP sockets for changing OpAmps. I think the sound quality of the D2 will be better than the D1, too.

If you want a portable amp too, the D2 and D1 will go well. The D1 is a tad... large for portability however. You could also look at the Go-Vibe Petite, which is supposed to sound great for slightly lower than the D2, and also has a USB DAC. Plus, its pretty small and err... petite. Meier 2Move would also be an option at this price.

Personally, I'm going to order a D2 this Sunday if they haven't sold out of the DIP Socket version. If not, I'll probably just go for a Petite, unless the D2 gets some really nice reviews.

If you get that D2, let us know how it is. I wonder how superior it may be to the D1.
