Edit: It appears the IGN folks added the GPU's power to the equation...

Edit2: Their numbers show the Cell's power at about 218Gflops, this is probably closer to the theoretical maximum than my number because I was rounding funny and not including the dual core PPC into the equation.

Don't worry, you were only an order of magnitude off...
Just don't divide by zero.

The 2 systems are about on par but with the ps3
running a little faster and uses 7 cores which is like(example)
a Pentium 4 at 7 ghz compared to a idk uhh... 7 core proc running 7 ghz
7 cores win because it may be slower but can do more calculations at once

correct me if im wrong but i think the x360 has a single core proc.
not really sure

Well, it is a gaming platform based upon a server chip. Does that make it more a server? I'll let you decide that.

By the way, reading this piece reminds me of that Stargate SG-1 episode where they gated to a planet that was being sucked into a black hole and the SG team on the other end was in slow motion. Good episode.
Damn good episode. You just took ma heart.

Looks to me like the department just used the research as an excuse to get themselves a bunch of university-paid PS3s. Honestly its hard to believe an university can't find a bunch of networked computers to simulate it, for much cheaper considering they don't have to purchase new hardware.

Here at my school Purdue University also uses a bunch of PS3's to run simulations.
I dont understand what you mean by used the research as an excuse?
Are you saying that their research is something not important or something?
