Help me choose a CPU - Page 2

Well with the Q6600, doesn't it overclock to roughly the same values as an E2180 (3.4 vs 3.2)? And don't most applications not utilize all four cores? Hard for me to justify an extra $200 for another 200MHz and two extra cores that are rarely used.

Gigabyte, thanks for reminding me that the E8400 is new and better ones are on the way. I almost got caught up in the excitement of new parts haha. I think my course of action right now is to only get the hardware I need. The price/performance ratio is right for the E2180. Worst case I end up replacing it in 1-2 years when I need more performance, and my $80 investment will have given me 1-2 years of great performance. And by then, today's $200+ will be under $100 anyway.

Anyone know of some OEM 2180's for less than newegg? It'd need to have free (or near free) shipping since I'd save on shipping by getting everything from newegg. Obviously I'll be using my Zalman not the stock cooler.

Right now I'm leaning toward the Abit and the Corsair 550VX unless someone can convince me otherwise. Thanks for the help thus far guys.

Gigabye DS3L
Corsair 550TX
E2180

The Abit IP35-E is cheaper and linskingdom also has it and the E2180, so maybe he can help you through a good overclock with it, and together, it costs less too.

ooo thank you Lins, rep+

By the way, can I recover the "My Documents" on my HDD? After I drastically switch hardware like this, will I still be able to boot into Windows to safely throw my wanted files onto my external HDD, or at the very least reinstall Windows while preserving all those files?

You will need a fresh installation because of new chipset. You can backup the my documents folder to a flash drive and restore back after you install OS and office products.

Well, I have a trick. You can also just pull out the files from your hard drive without booting. Just make it act like a external hard drive. This should work, since I have done it a few times. Anything on the desktop is gone, but if you have it inside your "My Documents" the files are safe there if you open the hard drive like this.

And usually changing parts, the hard drive should work, but not always in my experience.

Hmm, now I have a friend with the same ASUS mobo that I originally had and a 4200+ like I have. I've since switched to the Biostar, but would my HDD work in his machine? He has a 7600GT, but I could put my 7900GT in there too if that'd help

EDIT: And how would I go about backing up the files to a flash drive once I install the new hardware?

EDIT X2: Ok, my buddy says I could put it into his machine as a slave drive and pull files off of it, is this the easiest way? And this guy lives like 30 mins away, could I put it into the Intel machine of my roommate's comp and do the same, make it a slave and get the files that way?

Yes!

That is the way I was talking about; I apologize if I made you confused.
Just use it as a slave (that was the term I had to use but did not remember it).
Just drag the files to his computer or to your flash drive from your original hard drive.

Yea, it doesn't matter what rig you put the hd in just be sure to set it as the slave drive and don't try to boot off it. That is prob. one of the easiest ways to get those files. Or use a jumpdrive and just throw them on it.

And You obviously have no clue as to what you just said.

So anyway, durch if the E2180 fits the budget then get it, it's not a bad cpu at all, but if you could get the E4500 I wouldn't say it is a waste of $50.

As everyone has said the Q6600 is the best out right now but even I passed it up to just get a E6750, no point to 4 cores if you can't fully utilize them and by the time we can Nehalem will be here.

Excellent, thank you all for your help. I will go home and play with my dead rig a little to try and get it working again, but when that fails (and it will lol) I plan on purchasing:

$50 - E2180 OEM
$70 - Abit P35 (after $30 MIR)
$85 - Corsair 550VX (after $15 MIR)

Though saddened by the loss of just over $200, I must say I'm excited to leave the shackles of a first edition AMD Windsor core and play with my first Intel rig. New overclocking knowledge awaits

Now all I need is a reason to throw in a 9600GT or 8800GT... lol.
