Not sure if it'll work on 64bit, but I use VLC Media Player. It does require some tweaking of the output modules in the program to work on Vista, though.

For anime i'm assuming?

Try CCCP Codec pack. http://www.cccp-project.net/

Its not like most codec packs that cause errors and problems, its very small and it has just what you need to run 99.9% of MKV files, including Media Player Classic (the best player IMHO).

If you don't actually need the codecs you can download Media Player Classic by itself here:

I don't see why you would assume anime?

MKV is usually used for any high-def video. VLC player is definatly the easiest option, as you just have to install it and it works.

Most anime is in MKV too.. VLC has very crappy quality espically for HD videos compared to MPC. But yes.. VLC is the easiest option. Unless he is using subtitles which VLC sucks at. (Which is why I mentioned anime)

Another one for CCCP here, just does the job. It's simple unlike the Klite ones.

I haven't found any issues with playing any media file types on Vista 64bit. Nothing that would necessitate a special player, or a codec that would not be required with any other OS.

I simply use K-lite mega and Media Player Classic. But, these others mentioned will work as well.
