If your really worried then go get an after market cooler. Or get some artic silver 5 and apply to stock fan.

I will more than likely bring it back tomorrow. I just don't know if I want to get another 9600 with a evga or xfx vendor. But then again newegg has some good deals on 8800gt/gts cards.

As for my case, I am worried air flow is horrible. I have one decent sized fan in the front pulling air on to my hard drives. I have a big 120mm in the rear pulling off heat from the cpu as well as the stock fan that is mounted on the side panel that pulls from the cpu... there is NO fan blowing on the 9600. And with this case there is really no other place to mount a fan. i could get a slot cooler, but I really dont think it would make much of a difference considering it would just pull hot air from the 9600 to the bottom of the case.

I dont know what I want to do. But 60 C load for 45 mins on COD4 seems too high. I am not sure if I want to get an aftermarket cooler as I doubt PNY would like it very much if I had to send it off for rma for any reason.

There are a lot of other OCN members with the same setup as you do without any temperature issues so it could have been a crappy job by the manufacturer when they mounted the heatsink. If you were to take it off I'm sure you'd find the TIM glopped on the core. They always apply it too liberally.

There's a reason why thermal pads are used. There is a larger gap between the memory and the heatsink than there is between the core and the heatsink meaning you need something to provide contact. That would be where the thermal pads come in.

Never substitute thermal compound for thermal pads.

Anyway, I can't see your fan being slower than the rest since PNY uses nVidia's reference model meaning everything should be at spec with every other manufacturer that uses the reference model for their boards.

Maybe you should run RivaTuner's hardware monitor or another application that will let you monitor your fan speed at 100% and compare it to others in order to verify whether your RPM's are really lower than other manufacturers.
I didn't know that. Wish I did though... bet you can guess why.

Question. Will an aftermarket cooler for a 8800 fit on a 9600?

Good question.....

What are your temps like with the PNY?

The best thing I can say is to check out the manufacturers. Thermaltake, Arctic Cooling, Zalman, etc. See what they have to offer and what models their coolers fit.

Here is a good round up of different VGA coolers. Grab the manufacturer and model and head to their website.

@ PhatMuffinMan, I idle at 46c with AS5 applied. She's not about to explode, but it's a little warm for my liking. I'm a freak when it comes to temps.

@ Perry, +1 for the help.

You never stated weather or not you used rivatuner to increase the fan speed. I've been running mine at 60% and my max so far under loads has been 53c. Though I have a 120mm fan blowing right on my GPU. Reguardless it seem your case airflow should be enough to keep your temps well below 70c.

From the temps I've been seeing everyone get with this card you shouldn't need to spend any dough on an aftermarket cooler. I agree it's prbly just a bad biuld and I would send the card back for exchange. If you can bear to wait fot it.

I'm really hoping that with newer updated drivers this card will out proform the 8800GT, but that just remains to be seen.
