AMD Phenom 9600BE - HD3870X2

Im having some problems. I got my RMA Phenom back and have it up and going. Have ran into some weird problems.

I overclocked my Phenom 9600 Black Edition to 2.8ghz, havnt had any blue screens or freezes yet... The weird thing about my overclock is... I set the Multi to 14X, everything else is set to auto. When I go into the BIOS it shows that it is clocked at 2.3ghz, if I use CPU-Z it shows 2.3ghz. But windows Vista recognizes it as 2.8ghz and so does 3DMark06.

But here is the weird thing... Now I installed the new Phenom, I was scoreing 11700 on 3dmark. I messed with some settings on the ATI Catalyst to make my video card performance better fit what I like... Messed something up and I set it back to defaults... Then my video card droped in performance by a lot (More than half) when I do a 3dmark06 3200 points on the CPU is what I get if it's at 2.3ghz or 2.8ghz.

I checked my HD3870X2 on GPU-Z and it was showing that the first core/memory was running at 411mhz core 450mhz memory for the default clocks. The second was where it should be... 825mhz core 900memory. Because I have no crossfirex support yet for both of my cards, I took out the one that I had been using and went off the other... Restarted the computer, and all of a sudden, I have no drivers for my card anymore... ***? So I reinstalled the drivers again.. for my video card and my scores went up quite a bit. I couldnt save every one of my 3dmark tests, but I can show the ones I have...

This is what I just got after reinstalling the drivers. 12500, was getting 8500 before reinstalling drivers. The CPU score stayed the same for both tests.

With my AMD X2 6000+ I scored 12000 with 1000 less points on the CPU score. Im having a hard time understanding this...

If anyone can help, it would definitly be appreciated.

Cool and Quiet is off... Im at work right now... Can't get any screen shots of it... There are a few questions in this.

Why is my CPU giving off the same score at 2.3ghz as 2.8ghz?

Why are my scores 1000 points lower on my video card?\\

Why is my card showing that 1 core is running at what it should be, then the other is running at half speeds?

System specs:
CoolerMaster Stacker 830 w/ 1000W CoolerMaster PSU
2X Asus HD3870X2
Asus M3A32-MVP Deluxe 790FX
AMD Phenom 9600 /w Water Cooling
4GB Mushkin Extreme Performance PC2-8500
150GB WD Raptor & 500GB WD SATAII

Rain, make sure there isn't anything enabled that is related to "thermal throttling". Please make sure that "High Performance" is enabled in the Vista power management interface. Do you have another AM2 processor to test with?

Good luck

Taking a stab in the dark, this could be the difference between the 2d and the 3d cores? I see you're on CF so I assume you're talking about the 2 cards but it's worth a shot.

Also, try taking everything else off auto, auto might just be messing you around. What settings do you have on auto, fsb, dram etc?

Yes, tested this system with my AMD X2 6000+ was rock solid, worked great, never had a problem unless I tried to OC my proc.

All ready had it set to performance.

Nothing with thermal throtteling was enabled.

Rain, so the same issues that are happening with your 9600BE are also happening on your 6000+ X? Are you running BIOS 0801?

Good luck

The Video card issue was sort of the same... Never understood why one core was always at half speeds and the first one was at the correct speeds.

Yeah, I have BIOS 801.
