    Stick with my current GTS640

Hi everyone,

I'm having some sort of dilemma here.
I currently have an 8800GTS 640, wich performs quite nice. But still, there's the 8800GT wich I can get for around €180,- so I'm considering to sell the GTS while it's still worth something. I'm trying to get €200,- for it.

But if I would sell the GTS, I'd have 3 options. An 8800GT 512Mb (€180,-), GT 1024Mb (€220,-) or a GTS 512Mb (€270), wich also seems to be one hell of a performer when overclocked nicely.

If I would get a GT my preference would go to the 1024mb.
I know the 1024mb GT is more a gimmick, but benchmarks showed it was almost on par with the GTS 512, and it's not that much more money.. I'm only a little concerned about the 256bit memory bus. Anyone here with experience with one of these?

Another option is just to wait and stick with my GTS, see if any new, quicker, just as cheap cards will come by. I don't really want the scenario where I buy a new card and one month later a cheaper and quicker one comes by again.

So what would be the best idea?
Thanks!

-Radeon

Well, the GT is a great value. I wouldn't go with the 1gb version, though as it is a waste unless you are gasming at high resolutions. I would either get the GT or wait. I think you will be hard pressed to sell the gts for more than a new GT.

edit: Whenever I order a new GFX card, it seems like prices fall and newer cards come out in the few days it takes to receive the roder, lol. I stopped paying attention to the latest as there is ALWAYS something better coming.

About selling it higher that a GT.. my offer is actually one of the cheapest on those sort of sites. I've seen no GTS 640 lower than 200 and even a 320 at around 250

But yea, I might put it down to 190 or 180.. The price somehow always seems a lot less when the first number is changed in a lower one, even while it's not that much off

But trying to sell it would be a good idea?

Well, I am basing my advice on the price. I decided on a GTS G92 as it was $260 usd compared to $200 usd for the GT. Comparing the prices you have listed, I do not think the GTS is worth 90 euro ($135 usd) more for the performance gain. Although, this same inflation translates over to the sale of your old card, it is still a big gap. If you want a decent improvement that is a good value, buy the cheapest 8800GT you can find. Since the GTS G92 is (usually) only about 15% better, the extra price isn't worth it.

Also, what res. do you use? If it is less than 16x10, you won't see much gain from more memory or bandwidth.

I would not bother with a new GPU at all. You have a good one already and the gains you will see will be so minimal with your CPU clock so low.

You will boost your performance just as much by getting your CPU up to 3.6ghz or higher..

If you must get a new one though.. i would go with a 8800gt 512mb .. G92= cant go wrong.

So unless the GTS gets a price drop it's not really worth the extra money..

I guess it's the GT then.. My favourite res is indeed 1600x1200, so that 1gb might come in handy.. and it's allways good for bragging rights
by the way, aren't there some comparison benchmarks between the 512Mb and 1Gb version? I could only find a bench of the 1gb vs GTS 512..

@ CL3P20, Yea, i'd love to overclock further, but my zalman will not let me get much higher without going over 60C.. I'm now approx at 55-57 load, so I'd have to get a TRUE or something.. but my Zalman looks better

Wait until the new GTS 512MB gets a price drop and go for it
Or you can just get a 8800GT now if you dont want to wait.

Personally, the *ONLY* reason I traded in my 8800GTS 320MB for an 8800GT was because of the memory size issue ... I couldn't run STALKER (my fave game ever) with anything over Medium textures without 'slide show' action (1680x1050), nor was Crysis happy with >Medium textures. FWIW, my card OC'd to your same exact specs, 675/2000. WHich, btw, is a GREAT overclock for a G90 GTS.

If I had a 640MB GTS that OC'd to that speed, I would've been *perfectly* happy to keep it. Nothing wrong with that card. Switching to an 8800GT 512MB, would make absolutely ZERO sense to me if I had your card.

Sure, you get a few more shaders - but look at the 9600GT vs 8800GT benchies and tell me you think going from 96 > 112 is gonna do that much? It doesn't, and I know this from experience. You may be able to overclock a 8800GT a *bit* higher, but not that much, and maybe not at all. You may get an extra 500 3dMark06 points after you OC your 8800GT, MAYBE. BUT: you're also gonna get: less memory, more noise, more heat in your case, LESS ROPS (20vs16), and LOWER mem bandwidth (320vs256)! In totality, over all games, especially at higher resolutions and AA/AF levels, your max OC'd 640GTS is JUST AS GOOD if not better than a max OC'd 8800GT. Maybe not on rinky-dink 1024x768 BENCHES, but running actual GAMES at 1600x1200, 8xAA, 16xAF? Yeah. No. I wouldn't do it.

But that's just me

Edit: And don't forget, when you look at most benches of 8800GT's, they are usually OC'd versions being compared to a *STOCK* 640GTS at 500/1600. Your card at the speed it's at would show about 25% higher FPS scores than the ones you see for a 640 in your average 8800GT review's comparison chart. I'm sure you know this, but I just wanted to remind you

Hmm, it's really tough to decide what to do.. too bad there isn't a 'try before you buy' option with video cards to see if it would actually make a performance increase.
Right now I get 11408 3DMarks, and I've seen GT's with similar setups getting high in the 12K/lower 13K kind of scores..

the rest of the 9 series is scheduled for somewhere in April right? Maybe I'll wait another 1 or 2 months then and see if the prices drop, or an even better card will show up for around the same price the GT is now.

with my e6700 @ 3.3ghz and sig'd gpu at sig'd speeds, I was able to break 11,500 on 3d 06'

There is not much difference even w/ the gpu because your cpu is not able to supply the gpu enough for it to score any higher.

With no adjustments to the GPU at all, and e6700 @ 3.7ghz I hit 13,422
