An interesting note: the researcher is being funded by the UK gov't to develop this stuff. We need some earmarks for gaming research this side of the pond, imo.

Ray tracing has been around for years without a single implementation in the mainstream market.

I recall seeing ray tracing a year or two ago on hardware back then, actually it might have had something to do with the development of stream processors and how parallel processing could pull it off. I think programmers are just use to doing it the way they have always done it.

Ray tracing takes a huge amount of time to do. My friend does modeling. Ray-tracing one frame takes his P4 about 2 hours for a high quality picture.

And an 8800GTS 512MB is about 500x faster than that P4. However still not playable.

I'm guessing no one has heard of how this has been done already and you can play Quake 3 with raytracing? OpenRT is what it is called and it is like Direct3D or OpenGL as an API. http://graphics.cs.uni-sb.de/RTGames/ It has also been done already on the PS3for those of you who didn't know.
