For that picture to be a video at 30fps, you would need something about 216,000 times faster than his P4. I realize a P4 is really slow, but we are still nowhere near capable of something this fast being available to the public.

The ray tracing that they were showing seemed really choppy (maybe 5-10fps during the "climate change" portion), not to mention that they car wasn't doing anything...like AI, physics, particles, etc... were not being calculated with the THREE PS3s. Pretty cool that they have it working that well though. They didn't say what settings they were using....

I certainly see ray-tracing becoming more popular in the next decade...but we certainly aren't anywhere near there yet.

Ray Tracing is almost there...Intel has been interested in it for a while; they're building a framework to accelerate it, and are probably designing hardware specifically for it.

I predict that within 5 years, we'll have hardware that can ray-trace the less demanding current games.

Absolutely. This article is not meant to be related to gaming. This method is more realistic, but not even close to anything faster than current lighting techniques in gaming.

This method would be useful in insanely powerful computers, or computers in the future in conjunction with rendering programs.
