32 or 64 bit Vista? - Page 2

Usually I hear problems with the 32bit edition, but the 64bit seems the better way to go. When I asked about this a while ago, many said the 64bit was more compatible with programs than the 32bit edition.

So I am not sure.

Though the 64bit edition is better if you use more memory.

64 bits all the way. Games supporting 64 bits will run slot smoother. 64 bit apps load faster. 64 bit OS loads faster

The WOW64 Emulator that Vista has takes care of a lot of the 32bit program problems. Also there is a capatibility mode you can look into.

"There are few things you should now before you decide to install Vista 64-bit:

There are still some application written in 16-bit and Windows Vista 64 bit is not compatible with 16-bit software. I can say this issue is not so important because there are not so many applications in 16-bit extension.
If you have an older hardware and device like printer, scanner, webcam and etc. you should be sure if you can find the 64-bit drivers for your devices because Microsoft Windows Vista x86 is incompatible with 32-bit drivers.
It could be possible that some of 32-bit application do not run under Windows Vista 64-bit. If you are using an older version of Nero, Norton, MacAfee, iTunes, and etc. then you should research in internet if your versions of your applications are compatible with Vista 64-bit.
It is recommended to find out if your drivers are signed kernel-mode or unsigned kernel-mode. Because Vista 64-bit doesn´t support unsigned kernel-mode."

Yeah, what Luke said - 16-bit apps/games will not work under a 64 bit environment under any circumstances.

I have an old game called Chicken Invaders, its from like 1990 - does not work at all.

Reseach every program you use before switching though - drivers need to be digitally signed before they can install safely.

Things like iTunes, Logitech drivers for mice and webcams, and Firefox all have 64 bit compatibility

Hey, if you are unsure about something - throw me a PM, I will test it for you (given its safe software)

I'd say 64bit all the way, just make sure, as said above that you have the correct drivers available in 64 bit for your hardware.

Only problems I've had for 64 bit is drivers for my tv tuners, and digital signing for ATI Tool on vista. Other then those two problems, 64 bit all the way .

If you think that Vista 64-bit will not support 32-bit applications, you need to get on your knees and ask God why he did not give you a brain. Vista 64 will run 32-bit programs just fine. In fact when you install 32-bit programs, it puts it in a directory called Program Files (x86). What a Vista 64-bit cannot run is a 32-bit driver...hey imagine that!
