Unable to overclock Sapphire X1650 Pro

I don't understand this and I've been unable to find much information around the web about the problem, much less a resolution.

On attempting to overclock my x1650 Pro from sapphire I'm met with failure. When using CCC the overdrive utility, I'm able to overclock a slight amount but when I subsequently start a game the screen flickers excessively. This even happens if I overclock memory OR core speed by 1 MHZ.

If I try to overclock using ATI Tools or RivaTuner my computer locks up. If I speed up by a single MHZ my screen goes black and I either have to wait 10 minutes to be able to access anything to reverse the change or much more likely I'm forced to reset the comp.

The really stupid thing is my brother bought the same card but manufactured by HIS rather than sapphire. He's had little problem overclocking achieving 675 core from 600 base and 485 memory from 400 base with no artifacting or errors of any kind.

I'm not as knowledgeable as I'd like to be on the subject of OC'ing so if ANYONE knows ANYTHING that might help me I would love the assistance.

I used that card in my older setup and it was a terrible overclocker, and the sapphire heats up alot on stock cooling, I dont think you will have much luck with that card.

Yeah, that card would suck for overclocking, my x1600Pro was a reference one, and it overclocked well with a Zalman VF900Cu, so I have it at x1650Pro speeds right now

I picked up a HIS 1650 Pro, and let it be said: It will not overclock. I think they are just bad cards.

Thanks for the replies. What really bugs me though is the HIS my bro bought has been successfully overclocked. Like I said he achieved good gains, the sapphire won't even oc 1 MHZ... I don't understand how its possible for the card to wimp out on a 1 MHZ change.

Was it a purposeful decision by sapphire? I mean is it some kind of "feature" to keep people from burning out their cards??

By the sound of it there's little hope of remedy in this problem....

What speeds do your cards run @ guys?

I'm a user of an X1650 Pro, Factory OC

625MHz / 1400 I believe

I read around on other forums and it seems like the only way to oc the card is to do a volt mod and replace the cooler on it.

pity no one told me before i bought one though

yep i have had an overclocking issue, and its a real b*stard aswell. i installed the ati drivers (not the sapphire ones) for my x1650 512mb AGP card and ati overdrive (should be ati UNDERDRIVE) halfed my memory speed from 700mhz to a measly 398mhz. now when ever i try to return my card to its former glory, my system hangs. and sapphire kindly told me that its not there problem (using some fancy wording) nice

any suggestions?

well the good news is i can over clock mine but mine isant a sapphire its a gecube game buster edition my speeds are

Core Clock in MHz547 MHz
Memory Clock in MHz450 MHz
i found riva tuner 2.11 works for me and be sure that your bios is set up right otherwise these cards are notorious for being unstable

and im sure i could push it a bit further yet but the truth of the matter is that the rest of my system is lacking and so caps my frame rate (in the proses of rebuilding my gaming rig after a lightning strike) im using a hunk of junk sempron 1.83 GHz atm on a doge worthy foxconn board
