Nvidia vs Ati

Thread Starter
Hello,
Let me say before you start the drive by's of my house, this is just for personal info. I have had Nvidia's for as long as i can remember. But, what is the real difference between them? And which has been setting the bar for gpu's? And pls try to use a non bias, fact driven truth. I want to know because, I was looking at a screen shot on another thread in here and it shows that a ati hd 2900 xt has over a 30k 3d benchmark, and that throws me. I have thought that nvidia was the top dog as far as quality and was the benchmark for vcards? I do realize that it could be anything that go that high of a mark, and I am not that well verse in vcard tech, etc. So, since I wanted to know i figured this is the best place to ask. Because, everytime i have a question about something to do with computers, I have come here and been shown repect and always walk away knowing more then I did. So, again thank you for your help and info.

1) that was probably 4x2900XT in crossfire. does that make more sense now?
2) nVidia has been kicking ATI's butt in the performance vs. price department for some time now.
3) Technology-wise, I would say ATI is somewhat ahead/more sophisticated. The primary reason that nVidia has been winning in performance was their decision on their chips to make their shaders run at 2.5x the core speed, whereas ATI's shaders run at the same speed as their cores.

I suspect if ATI is able to replicate what nVidia has done on that front, they will regain the performance lead due to their technology (especially the memory-ring bus) being otherwise more advanced than that of Team Green.

Others who know more than me will probably disagree ... I don't pretend to have all the answers, so ... that's just my $.02

I think nVidia plain and simply knows how to play the market and how to advertise. They do this by delivering good product which gives better real world performance and stable firmware/drivers. ATI has faltered in that arena and people want a product they can trust and achieves the best possible real world results. In the end that is why nVidia has done so much better than ATI, or at least in my opinion. However, I hope that ATI can rebound as they only need to tweak some minor issues. Competition is a good thing.

Ok thanks. Not that I am planning on leaving Nvidia. I like the produce. Never had any real problems with it. Just made me wonder when I seen that 30k benchmark. And, never really looked into or hear what the real difference was. But again thank you.

Nvidia does a much better job of getting their name out there and are known for performance. ATI has always had some decent products and is generally known as having better image quality(IQ)

Most people that swear by nvidia and no other have never actually owned an ATI card. It is very similar to the AMD/Intel wars. People like to think that what they own is the best and never actually compare these on an item to item basis.

Right now, nvidia has a very strong product with the 8 series and the G92 core. ATI has a great price vs. performance with the 3850 and 3870 and has a great start on the 3870 X2 as far as dual GPU/single card solution.

As mentioned, ATI is generally known to have poor driver support (initially anyways), but performance and quality generally improves with each new driver. This is not really the case with nvidia.

So, even though most people swear by nvidia and they have some great cards, there are still some really great ATI cards as well. When the 2900 price dropped recently, it was one of the best cards for the money, but somewhat overlooked due to the 8800GT and the reputation for being hot and power hungry. Whenever anyone is looking for a new GFX card, I always advise them to pick a price first, and then compare what is available. With the 9 series starting to look like a rebadged 8 series and the ATI 4xxx's on the horizon, things may change in the future. (as they usually do )

Anywho, there are always die hard fans for both companies regardless of the merit of the product. I have owned both and have been happy with both.

edit: FYI, one of the reasons the 2900 cards had the 3dmark record for a while was due to the fact that it obverclocked much better under extreme cooling (ln2) than the 38xx or 88xx. Also, keep in mind that it is just a benchmark and has no real relevance to gaming performance. Just like how everyone always uses FPS as a gauge to performance. Since there is no way to quantitatively measure IQ (and it is subjective anyway) there is nothing else to go on. Think of it this way: If a GFX card can average 200 FPS in a game or bench, it can achieve that a few different ways. Say it has a high of 300 fps and a low of 100 while a competing card has a high of 250 and a low of 150. The averages are the same, but at its lowest point, the second card performs better. I would rather have 150 FPS at the most intense part of a game than 300 when staring at the sky.
