Upgrading... FINALLY

Thread Starter
Well I know its not much but I'm finally dedicating some of my money to upgrade my now aging comp. I have about 150 to upgrade my sig rig, with possibly another 200-300 coming in later (would be used for the graphics card). I'm hoping that for 150 I could buy some new ram and a new PSU, maybe if there is extra I would throw down for a nice sound card. What I am worried is that all this new ram or possible new graphics (potentially a 8800gts 512) would be bottlenecked by my processor.

Basically just hoping that I could have some helpful guidance on what my money ($150) would be spent on. Thanks for any help!!!

Even if you Bottleneck, your system will still perform better then what it does right now.

People hear the word "BOTTLENECK" and freak out.

If you have a "bottleneck" your system will not perform worse, it will still perform better but not at 100% of what it could.

With the $150, i say just go and get more / better ram and then when you get your 8800GTS, play around and if you dont like the improvement, then get a new CPU

After the ram tho what should my money go to? I can spend all 150 without worrying about the graphics card so that should potentially leave $100+ (rams seems to be plummeting) for something else... like a psu?

DDR2 memory is so stinkin' cheap right now the price can only go up from here. Definitely get the best RAM you can buy. Now is the time. Post up questions in the proper thread if you are unsure as what to get.

As for the graphics card, I would scrap the 8800GTS 512 idea and get an 8800gt. If they would have been out when I bought my 640Mb GTS I would have gotten that instead. I would have gotten basically the same performance for $150 cheaper.

Can my psu stand an upgrade like that? Or should I spend extra on a new psu? If so what psu?
