Which 8600GTS? Help!

Thread Starter
As before, I'm trying to learn as much as I can from the good people here at OCN.

I've finally narrowed my budget down to the last penny. I learned that I cannot get the 8800GS yet, so I'll stick with my original plans to upgrade later, and just go with the best my budget will allow right now, while acquiring the best bang and quality for my buck.

So, here's the NewEgg comparison page of four 8600GTS cards. There's one BFG, two MSI's, and one EVGA which has the Step-Up Program (but I don't like that I'll be without a card while I wait for them to ship me a new one.. but then again, patience usually pays off, right?...)

I'm not going to be doing any hard-core gaming on this. The most demanding game I currently own is Tron 2.0 (but I haven't played my copy on my own computer yet). I'm guessing that once I put my build together and start using it, I'll probably want to play games that are a little more demanding, but still... The other thing I will be doing is watching dvd movies, copying dvd's (and of course cd's), and the rest is your typical use like e-mail, web browsing, watching high quality internet videos like movie trailors, and the drum videos over on drummerworld.com (which I haven't been able to watch on this pc since they started requiring Quicktime7).

One of the things I'm wondering is, if I "never" upgrade, which one of these is the best value (quality + bang) for my buck? Or rather, if you had to choose between these four, and only these four, and had to use it for the next 6 months to a year doing the things above, which one would you get?

Money is no object with these four choices that I've narrowed it down to. I need some serious education and help here. I appreciate it all so much.

What is your max budget? Honestly, if you are using this for gaming, you won't get much out of the 8600 series.

I suggest saving up to get maybe a 8800GS at the least.

What is your budget?

If you can spend a little more get a ATI 3850, NVIDIA 9600GT or 8800GS.

lol I said in my Rep that you stayed on topic with the 8600 series. My fault for not clicking on the links first.

Thank you again though.

As for my budget, I'd say that it's topping out at like $115 shipped or so. I can probably go higher, but I'm afraid to.

But for now, I just want to know the differences between those two cards I picked out. That's all I need right now. I'm currently not interested in the 8800, the 9600, as I cannot afford them.

You see, I'm not actually going to purchase a video card until late March when the prices should fall due to new products being completely rolled out.

So again, for my education, how much better is that 8600GTS than the GT?

BFG 8600GTS
EVGA 8600GT

Thank you.

In fact, this MSI OC 9600GT 1GB 256-bit GDDR3 will probably be my next card when I can afford it.

Save for the 8800GS as it is a superior card over 8600GTs. This it becauseit has 128MB more ram 64bit more mem bw and it has 96SP vs 32SP which as u can see its alot.

240 is to much and 1GB is a overkill in that card it will not use it because it has 256 bit bus and u can find them for 180 average.

well i have owned both of them, and a 8800gt. IMO i would go for the 8600GTS, the difference is definently marginal, 8600gts use faster or better quality ram chips or something. I dont see why people say that card sucks, its not high end, its low end, and for low end being able to play ALL new games, including crysis, deserves its attention. $60AR and being able to even play crysis. Sure youll be playing at low, but it can play it fine. By the time new cards come out, the 9600gt should be even cheaper, forcing AMD's 3850 to fall so keep an eye out for that.
