It is but then again applying any TIM can be risky...you may put too much or too little causing an overheat...

Update: It's 2:34 CDT and I'm still sitting at 43C after being on all day. I'm about to head out now and get some actually thermal paster and a new heatsink/fan setup, but that is a total of 14 hours with diaper rash cream cooling my cpu.

As a side note: Desitin is also known to have lots of Vitamin A & D, so if you ever get a tattoo, you can spackle some on your tat while you are cooling your CPU. BONUS!

Haha. That's great. This thread made my day. I'm amazed at how well it is working for you actually.

Did anyone else find it funny when people were asking for "loads", and he's using rash cream? Sorry.

Well, I start to rummage around for what ends up being over a half an hour to no avail. Finally I jump on my cell phone browser and start looking. I found a small discussion on the interwebs that spoke of homemade TIM and I started reading it. It sounded like a lot of bollocks at first, then I got to the part about Desitin(the stuff for diaper rash). Well, with no place open in Iowa City at 12:30 to purchase thermal grease, and no other option I set off to WalMart.

Long story short, I am now sitting at 37 degrees C with baby butt spackle as my coolant compound. I am obviously going to run out first thing tomorrow and grab some AS5 and a new heatsink since this one needs to be replaced anyways, but wow...how is that for ya.
LOL@"baby butt spackle"!!

Nice open-mindedness GibbyGano!

Edit: What's "TIM"? (My name is Tim, so this is a little weird)

TIM = Thermal Interface Material.
Once again...

Sitting at 38 right now with temps still dropping using some good ol' Silver Oxide compound, glad to have my computer all cleaned up and with real TIM again, but that was an adventure to say the least.

A final thought to all young men and women on OCN. If you plan to have a child someday and it gets hard because the little brat won't quit crying, puking, pooping, wanting attention, or what have you...remember you will always have diaper rash cream in a pinch, so it's not all bad.
