Massive overclocking change

Thread Starter
okay i just purchased said video card in my sig. soon after i installed and had everything running i started overclocking it obviously

well at first i was very impressed with overclocking potential, i had it running at 801 core and 1152 memory, ran ati tool for half hour no artifacts, and temps were in check(65 and below on depending on fan speed) i just went ahead and stopped there, i figured i could not get much more out of it anyhow

well last night i was going to run ati tool for a longer run, just to make sure it was good and stable, well to my dismay card started to artifact, pretty bad in about a minute, temps were still fine, but artifacts were pretty bad.

I backed down the overclock, it took me to 724 core and 1059 to get no artifacts, this is quite a significant difference, why would this happen, anyway to fix it????

fyi have not gamed to much on it yet, did a few crysis benchmark runs, and couple 3dmark06, score was 13050 if you are curious and crysis bench 39 fps at 1280x1024 at 16AA

Anything can effect an overclock really, the temperatures might have been significantly lower the first time you tried. The card may have just settled and can no longer achieve the clocks or the card isn't receiving enough power.

I'm no authority on this by any means so take what I say with a pinch of salt as I could be chatting breeze.

I think its most likely the latter, from what i've seen shader overclocks reqire more voltage compared to core/mem.

My GTS artefacted after eight hours running a artifact scanner, I had it at 750/1025/1900, had to back down to 1860 and currently its at 750/1020/1850 and its pretty stable.

If you look it up alot of people find with GT's that too high and OC will last only for
a brief time afterwords the card will either fry, or not acheive that result, almost
as if its burning itself out, this is why the OCed versions of the GT expressly say
warr is void if OC above the stock OC. ! The new core is not as voltage or OC
friendly apparently

There's a thing that very few oveclockers readily admit, and that's the part you want to push to a certain OC and hold it there 24/7 needs to be kept for a while at stock. In other words it's not advisable to OC it immediately after buying it.

Now it's too late for that, but in the future you could try to take it easier. If both test were run in similar conditions (case temperature, fan speed, applications) there is a problem, because a degrade in the OC usually means silicium fatigue. Before going there tho, check the +12V rails, do they output at least some 11.8v? An underpowered card artifacts faster under OC.

If the max OC degrades further and you arrive below stock speed to keep it stable, it's RMA time. If not, you should probably upgrade the cooling and maybe Vmod to achieve better clocks.

EDIT. I tend to agree with D.J.S, nVidia had issues with 7900 and 7600 cards that were factory OCed and fried sooner than the warranty voided.

My gts (bfg oc) is very sensitive to fan speed. I would try cranking the fan up to 80% and seeing if you can get back to your previous speeds. I don't personally think you can totally rely on the temp gauge, it only measures at one particular point on the chip and doesn't reflect memory chip temps at all.

When I run my fan at 80% my chip temp never rises above 55C and I'm able to run 810/1944/1145 on mine, but at 50% or less it won't EVEN do that speed without ati tool 'freezing' for 10-15 seconds on a regular basis.

This is not to discount other's advise, I'm just adding my $.02.

Very good point also dragosmp , "burn in" is almost an essential part of OCing
a good portion of the devices time should be spent in "stock" mode before flexing
its oc muscles

how long do you think the burn in period is, it is at stock now, and i think i will shut my computer down a couple hours to let it rest as well

I usally "burn in" for about 1 week to 1 month before attempting serious OCs
I use Sisandra to burn in also.
