Building a HTPC with old parts...

So i'm looking for some input from you guys/gal.
I have an old system sitting here and i'm wondering if it would do 720p/1080i to my dlp.
specs are:
athlon 2600+
1x1Gb
250GB pata
9800 aiw pro
dvd
OS???

I'm not sure if the aiw has any mpeg2 hardware decoding, but i'm hoping it does to lighten the cpu load. For OS i was thinking either win2k or a light linux like freebsd. Only thing is linux and ati = issues.
What are you thoughts? I'm also looking for a nice HDTV tunner card for fta.

That processor might be on the limit of being able to do HD, although not entirely sure. It would be close.

i think is ok bare minimum to be able to run HD videos.
since my old rig could handle it with:
Athlon XP 2400+
512mb (2x256mb)
ATi 9550 256mb
120GB

it ran 1920x1024 res videos smoothly.slight jutter thats not too noticeable

Your video card does not support Avivo so that means no hardware decoding. In that case, you may have some issue with HD codec other than MPEG-2. You might want to pick up a 8500GT or HD3450 for that.
Once again...

Problem is the mobo is an asus k8n-e deluxe....probably the best socket A board. But it's agp, so any 8x/HDX would not work.

I'm also thinking of running it with a linux disto, maybe ubuntu or something - but it may be too much of a resource hog.

MPEG-2 should be ok... but it won't be able to handle H.264/MPEG-4 or VC-1

my old HTPC was an Athlon 2600, 768 DDR, and Geforce 6200 256meg and it could not run smooth HD content unless it was WMV HD format. Maybe it was the 6200 that was holding it back though..

try and get CoreAvc codec, youl have no problems playing back 720p x264 content.
