I say it's a good buy, just make sure you get a G0 stepping as they run cooler and OC better. Wolfdale is an option to, E8400 and E8500 but I am a bit leary about them yet with their sensitivity to vcore.

my quad core been doing fine at 3.6 Ghz with an asus cooler, also good choice on the motherboard, it's a great mobo, and overclock my q6600 to 3.6 ghz on first try. If you want to overclock ur q6600 to 3.6 or 3.2.. here's a link to it..
http://www.overclock.net/intel-mothe...ing-guide.html
ALSO, dont keep ur voltage that high.. im running at 3.6 and my voltage is only at 1.4688 instead of

Voltages:

Set Memory to 2.1 V (whcih is the default for my OCZ ram)

CPU Voltage:

For 3.2 I set it to: 1.3625

For 3.6 I set it to: 1.48125 <-- change this to 1.4688 [and FSB @ 1.3V]

*edit... at volt 1.48125.. my q runs at 65-69 under load.. at 1.4688v under load, the temp never go past 58C

Thermalright Ultra-120 eXtreme (TRUE) is better than the Tuniq Tower 120.
As for the TRUE, you will have to buy a separate 120mm fan to add on it.
If you lap it, it will be the closest thing to watercooling.

And the processor you chose is a very wise choice.
I would say it is pretty much worth every penny for now.

Hope that helps.

But is it worth the extra $?

Maybe, maybe not.

Well, he could go with the E8400, but I think the Q6600 would be a wiser choice, in my opinion.

To me it is worth it.

the q6600 will surpass and be more than enough still when it's Q4 time. i don't see why it would be thought otherwise
post #8 of 11
I'll echo what everyone else has mention. The Q6600 G0 is what you need since it will surpass your expectations at a good price. No need to wait for the new 9450's with them low multipliers.

Overclocks well with stock alone too. And you have a TT120, that'd be great, and if you want better, like I said, I suggest the TRUE + any good fans.

q6600 is a great processor. if it is a placeholder, id say go for it. If this is gonna be your heavy duty OC rig... you may think about getting the q6700 on april 20th. price drop to 300 bucks. you can get some killer OCs with a 10x multi vs 9x on the q6600.

for a 45nm solution, id wait till they come out with a mainstream quad core with a 10x multi. that might not be for a while though, maybe Q1 09.
