[Ars] What piracy crisis? - Page 7

People will always rationalize their behavior... If you're a pirate that's fine, just have the stones to admit it.

To all the peoples who say they pirate movies because they're poorly made...

What the heck do you think would happen if they made a GOOD movie? It'd be pirated 10x! The inspiration for making a good film is lacking these days, partially because of pirates sapping profits, and making it less profitable to actually make a good movie.

To all the peoples who say that piracy is ok because they'd never buy the movie in the first place...

That doesn't make it right to pirate it. If online piracy wasn't available, you wouldn't walk into a store and steal a DVD because it's not worth buying... you just simply wouldn't buy it! That's the way it's supposed to work.

To all the peoples who say that piracy may not be morally wrong, depending on whose morals are taken into consideration...

I have yet to see one detailed moral standing that logically shows stealing (or pirating) morally right. Sure, there's the robin-hood style of taking from the rich and giving to the poor, but really, if everyone did that, no one would have any reason to do ANYTHING. When you take away the incentive (money) for working hard, then no one will work hard. Nothing will be innovative or new, except perhaps for prestige or namesake.

If you take the viewpoint of any of the old philosophers (Aristotle, Hume, etc), they have their disagreeances, but generally they agree that good things are things that bring the largest sum of benefit (or utility) to everyone, and can be tested by an "if everyone did it" policy. Piracy may be good for you and a few others around you in the short run, but if everyone did it, it would completely eliminate movie-maker's incentive to make good movies, or even to make movies at all. Thus, by the philosophers' viewpoints, it is morally wrong.

If you take the viewpoint of the Bible, obviously piracy is wrong. Do not steal. Thus, by the Bible's viewpoint, it is morally wrong.

So please, someone show me a detailed, logical viewpoint for why piracy is right, and then maybe you'll get me to shut up. Otherwise, stop pirating.

Couldn't it be possible that neither side is 100% in the right?

I would like to think of this situation like this: Piracy could be a joint in a kids backpack at school. He shouldn't be doing it, it's illegal in most places. The RIAA is the kid that preaches to everybody how pot and the people who do it are terrorists and everyone who buys pot also donates to Osama Bin Laden and supports communism, when they aren't busy smoking drugs and eating babies. Just cause that one kid has a crackpipe, which is bad, doesn't make it right for the overzealous retard (RIAA) to rip open everyones backpack and bust into everyones car and when he finds the kid with the joint, stab him in the neck. Cause breaking into people's cars and backpacks (and neck stabbing) is just as wrong as joint smoking.

p.s. On the roe v. wade thing, Theres pro-life (noone should get abortions) and theres anti-life (everyone has to get abortions) then theres the middle ground, pro-choice (women should decide for themselves wether they get an abortion or not) I think the Anti-Life side is not represented enough in society.

No, it is pro-life vs. pro-choice. Anti-life would be just plain stupid.

I mean, do you seriously think anti-life needs to be more represented? If every woman had to get an abortion, then all humans would be dead in 100 years... how does that even make sense? Are you really as stupid as I think you are right now?

The thing that gets me is that it seems that the punishment for stealing a movie online is much greater than actually physically stealing a DVD, which is what? Petty theft?

Personally, I'm not anti-life. I'm just saying thats the opposite argument of pro-life. I don't think any one group should be able to tell everyone what they can and can't do with themselves. I think pro-life and anti-life are retarded ideas. And the only support the poor anti-life side is one-child-per-family China.
