Please take an Econ course before saying that... I won’t even comment further on this subject because I don’t feel like taking the time to do what your teachers should be doing (or should have done).

Personally, I mostly agree with you Stargate. I personally believe it's immoral...but that's not to say it will be immoral for everyone. I would like to see someone prove that second bit though… I don’t pirate, I don’t condone pirating…but that’s my opinion.

What the heck do you think would happen if they made a GOOD movie? It'd be pirated 10x! The inspiration for making a good film is lacking these days, partially because of pirates sapping profits, and making it less profitable to actually make a good movie.

To all the peoples who say that piracy is ok because they'd never buy the movie in the first place...

That doesn't make it right to pirate it. If online piracy wasn't available, you wouldn't walk into a store and steal a DVD because it's not worth buying... you just simply wouldn't buy it! That's the way it's supposed to work.

To all the peoples who say that piracy may not be morally wrong, depending on whose morals are taken into consideration...

I have yet to see one detailed moral standing that logically shows stealing (or pirating) morally right. Sure, there's the robin-hood style of taking from the rich and giving to the poor, but really, if everyone did that, no one would have any reason to do ANYTHING. When you take away the incentive (money) for working hard, then no one will work hard. Nothing will be innovative or new, except perhaps for prestige or namesake.

If you take the viewpoint of any of the old philosophers (Aristotle, Hume, etc), they have their disagreeances, but generally they agree that good things are things that bring the largest sum of benefit (or utility) to everyone, and can be tested by an "if everyone did it" policy. Piracy may be good for you and a few others around you in the short run, but if everyone did it, it would completely eliminate movie-maker's incentive to make good movies, or even to make movies at all. Thus, by the philosophers' viewpoints, it is morally wrong.

If you take the viewpoint of the Bible, obviously piracy is wrong. Do not steal. Thus, by the Bible's viewpoint, it is morally wrong.

So please, someone show me a detailed, logical viewpoint for why piracy is right, and then maybe you'll get me to shut up. Otherwise, stop pirating.
Excellent post! I personally haven’t seen a good argument for piracy…and probably never will. Stealing is stealing…if you think you’re not a bad person for doing it, by all means, do what you will. But if you are ever caught...I am quite sure you will be pleading for mercy, not trying to prove that larceny is moral.

Personally, I mostly agree with you Stargate. I don't necessarily think it’s immoral, because like others have pointed out, it depends on the situation and the person. I don’t pirate, I don’t condone pirating…but that’s my opinion.

There's a small amount that would download rather than go to the theatre but I beleive the overwhelming majority go to the movie theatre for the express purpose of "going to the theatre". Those who want to go out to see a movie will, and those who don't want to go out were not going to go out anyway.
