[engadget] Sony "in talks" with Microsoft about a Xbox 360 Blu-ray drive - Page 2

okay why are people getting worked up about this? sure for some of us like me who have a 360 and no ps3 can possibly now buy a cheap player ($300?) and not a whole new system or a standalone player.

Either way sony makes money off of it cause now it opens their blu ray market up to the millions of xbox 360 owners, and we all know that to date, there are more 360's out there then ps3s.

or can do what i was planning, buy a ps3 for just blu-ray and the very few games that are actually worth getting.

but if the blu-ray player for 360 is coming anytime by fall or winter, you best bet i'm not gonna even bother buyin a ps3 now.depending on the price of course. if the price difference between the blu-ray add on and a ps3 is like 50-100 dollars, then i would just by the ps3. but 150 and up difference, its the blu-ray player for 360

Now whether those 360 owners are gonna buy a blu-ray add on, thats a whole other topic.

Yes, It WILL happen.
I have been watching this format war like everyone else ...?

Theres no point for M$ to release a blu-ray player, it won't help their gaming system, and they don't make any money from the movies, sure they'll make some from selling the players, but not much.

Main reason M$ offered the HD add-on was to fight blu-ray and try and hurt its competition (PS3)...

What I'm saying is, sure Microsoft could produce a blu-ray add-on, but what do they gain from doing so?

its strange how a single drop of 360 fanboyism can effect a whole statement, but the blu-ray capability is only one of PS3's selling points so now that you've admitted that blu-ray even WAS selling point for the PS3 you can start to admit that 2008 is the year that PS3 is actually a threat. So that means that you need to look at things this way:

A stand alone blu-ray player for the 360 will probably be exactly the same as the stand alone HD-DVD player which we all know was amongst the worst of the bunch. They cant rewind time and make the 360 a blu-ray internal machine so consumers will have a different decision to make if they already have a 360. Standalone 360 Blu-Ray player or standalone blu-ray player for basically the same price? Second one quite obviously. OR pay $150 more and have a whole other console with one of the best blu-ray players on the market built into it. Unbiased overview > biased overview.

They gain an investment in what is likely the future format, and they get money from the players. Along with it allows the Xbox 360 to still remain media-centric like the PS3 and offer the ability to play the newest HD movies.

It will happen; probably soon.

Don't forget, Sony does not own the majority of Blu-Ray tech. They are just the major public force behind its marketing right now because of thier PS3 using it. Also, Sony makes no money on the PS3 itself, so it only stands to make money by licensing BR tech to MS. They will make money off the license, movies bought, and even moreso off the movies bought that were Sony Entertainment releases.

As a 360 owner who only plans to buy a PS3 for movies, and maybe 2-3 games over the next year, I say the sooner the better.

MS would gain by selling a console that argueably has better games along with the ability to play both HD formats. So those who never planned to buy a PS3 will buy something from MS(giving them a bit of profit) and not buying a PS3 or Sony standalone(not giving Sony as much profit).

By your same logic, why did they offer a stand alone HD-DVD player then? All it would do is play movies since not every 360 would have one.
