Gigabyte>DFI??????

Thread Starter
i've been rocking a gigabyte ga k8n pro sli for the past few years. It was a great overclocker for my sandy 3700 2.92 on stock volts. when i got my new opty 180 i could get it to 2.91 but not stable so i left it at 2.63ghz and scored a 5500 in 3d06. I felt my MOBO was limiting my overclock so i purchased a DFI lanparty ultra d from a fellow overclock.net member on the board and was able to get 2.96 ghz stable out of my opty. Great, so i'm expecting a better 3d06 score but this was not the case. I score a 5100 with this board at 2.96. less then i was scoring at stock speeds (2.41) on the gigabyte board (5400 3d06). I don't get it? why am i getting a worse score on this better board. I love the board and all the features it came with, but it is seemingly a worse performer then my gigabyte board. I was planning on selling the gigabyte on ebay but now i'm split , should i sell my gigabyte for around 60-70 on ebay, and rock the new DFI which scores lower on 3dmark 06, or should i keep the gigabyte and sell the DFI and try to get my money back from the purchase?
i hate it when i thought i was upgrading and synthetic benchmarks say i went backwards, even at a higher OC. This board seems more stable to me which holds some value in my eyes, but is it worth 1/10th less performance, even when pushing my ram and cpu harder?
What would you do in my shoes?
my last option is to just sell the opty 180, both mobo's and my OCZ ddr 500, take all that money and put it towards an intel set up that will score better then my current setup.

If you're after better scores.... I'd say that your last option would be the best.

Have to agree with wing here. If you love to benchmark (as many do) then I think your best path is to sell your current setup and move over to a highly overclockable intel setup. I recently made the switch and it was entirely worth it. The only thing I wish I would have done is spend the extra $50 to get the nice P35 DFI DK board, I think I would have been more satisfied with that than my current DFI. The P965 is good but it lacks some options I really liked in my previous LanParty board.

Its an interesting situation youve posted and not uncommen.
A higher OC does not always mean better, or faster times/ fps/or benches
Of course a 1000mh oc is going to be better but when youve reached the
theoretical limit of a chip, there is a sweet spot. It very interesting and
if you read TOMS there is an article about e2160 and being more efficiant
@ 3ghz then 3.1, 3.2, or 3.3 the next boost comes if you can get a chip that
does 3.6 ish. Alot of tech and terms to describe this but it's the bottom line
of dimishing returns.
