RAM that virtually doesnt exist

Whats up guys, first off thanks for reading. Now heres my question
I have 4gig's of ram (4) 1 gigs sticks, dual channel on the mobo and Windows is only reading 2.75gb out of the 4. So im wondering if i take out 1 stick, will it effect the speed of the stick that it is reading, at least the 3\\4 of it. Just curious cuz im building my girl a computer and dont wanna spend the money on ram if i dont have to since theres a stick on my mobo that isnt even being used.

It's the 32-bit limitation, you will only see 3.5GB MAX, the rest won't be used even with BIOS remapping and there is no such thing as the PAE switch on Vista.

Are you running 32 bit or 64 bit? As 32 bit can't read all the ram, but 64 bit can .

Im running 32-bit and i know all about how 32 cant read 4 gigs. So my question really is , Is taking that stick that isnt being used going to effect the rest of the ram in the channel, because ive heard only have 1 out of 2 sticks in a channel can slow the speed or something like that.

The fact that the stick im removing wasnt even being used is what makes me wonder if its going to make any effect at all.. So far windows is still reading the same amount of ram with the 3 sticks and minus the 1. And im not really seeing a significant difference in gaming so i think i mite be good to go, but still if anyone has something to say about it, please do.

There is, but it involves manually editing your boot.ini file; I have done it

Bandwidth and amount of ram are two separate things.

Think of single channel as a one lane road and dual channel as a two lane road... its faster no matter what number of cars
