Good free MMORPGs? - Page 2

Has there been any major changes in Rappelz in the past several months? I quit that game because I was starting to get bored. Maybe I'll get back into it.

Good free MMORPG, thats a good paradox

There's no such thing as a good free MMORPG, the only types are:

-"Gimme my bandwidth back!"
-"Why did I install this? Now I have to waste more time uninstalling it"
-"I can't believe I spent a week playing this crap!"
-"I think I'll keep playing, maybe they'll fix <insert game breaking "feature">"
and finally
-"Hey this game was decent, but they're going p2p now and I wouldn't even pay 50c a month for it"

There was this one awesome free game I played a while back, it wasn't exactly an mmo, more of a lobby style d2 type game, but the controls and gameplay were unique and the graphics were the best 2d I've ever seen, but sadly, like 99% of the other f2p MMOs it closed about 6 months after beta.

What ones are worth trying,

Silkroad becomes repetitive after about level 15. Plus, they totally unbalanced the sides with the new europeans.

All the ones I've tried become really repetitive, you can tell they just made it to make money off the item shops.

Does rappelz get repetitive?

Isn't in the definition of an MMORPG to be repetitive? Not being a jerk or anything, but they are all designed to be repetitive otherwise they would have to make up infinite new content.

It's easier to write a loop than an endless program.

I would consider WoW and DAoC and Everquest 1 - all non-repetitive. Characters evolve and look different, and skills transform over time. You don't just level the same skill to see the same effects and kill the same monster to see the same loot. It changes, and so does the environment, plus they don't have item malls But they also aren't free mmorpgs.

Exactly, its takes lots of resources to make a new mmo, so to be "free" most companies cut and paste 90% of the code from other MMOs, just doing some half-assed job redoing the graphics and using a random name generator to create new items every 3 or 4 levels. (And lets not forget the whole +X rush job "I have have a Cruel Edge Longsword" "Oh ya, I have a Cruel Edge Longsword +2!!1!!!1!!ROFLPWNAGE!11!!")

If you see a free MMO, and it looks good, then its most likely a marketing gimmick.

I've nearly given up on the MMO genre, I'm just hoping Age of Conan will breath some life back into it, because I get everything I get from say WoW from TF2 and Oblivion, and I don't have to pay $20/month either!

After doing some lookup, shadowbane used to be a pay to play game. Now its become free 2 play. I'm downloading it as we speak. I'll update asap.
