TRUE Copper, IFX-14, and Prolimatech Megahalems are the best performing air coolers you can get. TRUE Copper is a rip off though (the other two cooler perform as well as it for 30-40 dollars less).
The Zalman 9700 is a pretty pathetic performer given how much it costs. It's matched or beat by heatsink less than half the price.
Heatsinks like the Xigmatek HDT-S1283 and the OCZ Vendetta 2 will perform very well on dual cores and lower clocked quads, but they do not handle the heat load of OCed quads very well.

Area for area, aluminum does not dissipate heat faster than copper.
It's been proven time and time again that copper fins of the same configuration are superior to aluminum fins. The problem is that the difference is minor and generally not worth the cost or weight.
