HTPC vs PS3

Thread Starter
Hi guys
im in a bit of a dilema as to build a HTPC or go for a ps3
ps3 pros: blueray player, play the odd ps3 game (i mostly play games on my main pc) web browsing

HTPC : can play my collection of MVK files,im on a budget and a 2600 or a 8600 aint gonna play me games to well that i play (ArmA etc..)

can u play mvk files on a ps3?
anyone think of any pluses or minisus for either machine
ps3 is edging it for me slightly but i wanna play all them mvk files on my HD lcd

I am pretty sure you cant play mkv files on the ps3. One advantage of the ps3 is that you can play blueray movies and it will most likely be cheaper than building a htpc. But if you are dead set on the mkv files, it looks like a htpc is the way to go.

HTPC can do more than a PS3. Blue-ray player prices for PC aren't bad right now either. At Newegg they are from $139 to $199USD. You can always upgrade your HTPC whenever you want.

My suggestion. Use divx converter and get those mkvs converted. Then go with the ps3. The price:feature is better. Just IMO goodluck choosing

$100 780G motherboard + video
$80 Athlon X2
$40 380w Earthwatts
$100 500GB HD
$30 2x1GB RAM
$150 BluRay Drive
$100 XP/Vista
------------------------
$600 + cost of case.

HTPC actually provides better price:feature since a PC can do more than a PS3. You get a larger HD and can use it as a server as well. The video processor provides better image quality. Add in a $60 tuner card to get DVR and placeshift features.
Once again...

If you are a PC gamer then just build the HTPC. The Playstation 3 is good for streaming media (haven't gotten mine to work yet; wireless is being a pain in the @$$ for me); I have seen a few friends who have managed to set theres up. An HTPC would still be better for what you need though.
