Orbiter
Technicaly not a game, but, rather a "Space flight Simulator" It's still bloody good fun and of course it gets the requisite:
"Highly Addictive" two thumbs up
Quote:
ORBITER is a free flight simulator that goes beyond the confines of Earth's atmosphere. Launch the Space Shuttle from Kennedy Space Center to deploy a satellite, rendezvous with the International Space Station or take the futuristic Delta-glider for a tour through the solar system - the choice is yours.
But make no mistake - ORBITER is not a space shooter. The emphasis is firmly on realism, and the learning curve can be steep. Be prepared to invest some time and effort to brush up on your orbital mechanics background. Good starting points are JPL's Basics of Space Flight, and R. Braeunig's Rocket & Space Technology.

For discussion with other Orbiter users, have a look at one of the Orbiter forums. More information and resources for users and developers can be found under the Orbiter Wikipedia entry and the OrbiterWiki site, both maintained by the Orbiter community.
There are huge amounts of info on the user forums (custom ships, cargos, highly detailed maps of planets and Moons etc.)

I just got into playing X3: Reunion. It has a huge open ended universe and a realistic universe wide economy. You can buy anything from small scout ships to huge orbiting production platforms and build a gigantic empire. On the negative side, it is a little slow to start and has a somewhat steep learning curve, and the story line is a little ridiculous. Although the good thing is you don't have to follow the story line at all.

agreed.

Freelancer was an AWESOME game! IDK if anyone else has noticed but it has alot of parallels w/ Wing Commander: Privateer. Alot of the lines and taunts that the enemies use in the game are the same. I think it's partially because when Origin software disbanded some of the main devs joined up w/ MS and the teams that did StarLancer and FreeLancer.

They realllllllllllly! need to make a Freelancer 2. There were alot of plot elements left hanging @ the end of the game :/
