I actually just started getting into gaming and I'm kinda hooked on counterstrike and company of heroes but I can only play COH with all the setting on low.

Right, so you'll need something more powerful than that wimpy 8600 series to run CoH... try out a 2900GT or HD 3850, ATi makes some good budget choices.

$100 is a very trick point. The extra $30 or $40 for here makes the big difference. If you stick with $120 budget, 2900GT is the way to go but need to watch out your PSU thou.

Yea I figured I'd go with this Rosewill 500w which should hold me over for a while.

My strong opinion:
8800GS
$135
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16814130332

You have 90 days to step up if you wish.
$150
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16814130333
core clock 100mhz higher

If your stuck on the 8600GT or GTS, more than 256mb would be a waste.
Rule of thumb:
more than 2x vram compared to memory interface is $ wasted

urmm, i run CoH maxed out on my 8600GT @ 46fps

But it is a dated card now and would be a complete waste of $$$ to buy one, in similar price range look at the 8800GS or HD3850, for a few dollars more you can get the 9600GT which is probably your best option at your resolution

I don't know where you get your info but you couldn't be more wrong I run coh at 1280x1024 everything on high and it runs smooth as silk. Right now with the way ATI is dropping their prices you might be able to pick up a 3850 at a decent price.

To answer your question, go with the GTS. Faster card, a good overclocker and a pretty good cooling solution that's quite quiet.

If you have the extra cash to play with you can go with what Lins said can pick up a 2900GT or even splurge for an ATI 3850. They're a bit pricier but give good performance for what you'd be looking to do.
