[My First] Mac

Thread Starter
Hey all, with the new Macbook Pros here, the old macbooks have down in price slightly. I saw the lowest end model for $920 on amazon. (1 gig of ram, 80 gig hard drive) I'm looking for a nice little laptop to use for school. $920 is really pushing my budget, but since all I'm gonna do is web browsing and word processing, a mac would be ok.

Anyone have anything to say about these? Is there anything else I should get over this?
It depends on if you are comfortable with a mac. I really see no problems with them except for a lot of my friends who have them get big headed about their stylish little notebooks and make fun of me because I have a VAIO.

He paid just about the same price I did for mine, and mine would burn his in any performance test. Mine isn't proprietary either.

He does recording stuff with a FirePod, and he says that it sounds so much better when he records it with his mac, but really, there is no difference because he doesn't understand how sound quality works.

Just putting my point of view on the table.

Word processing and web browsing on a mac is no different than it is on a PC other than the supposed "immunity macs have to viruses" because "they are so amazing."

I wouldn't trade my MacBook for any windows based laptop. 13'' screen is great for portability. I trip over my powercord alot but since its held in by a magnet, it just falls out with no damage to the laptop. I prefer OS X's version of office (It is slightly diffrent from window's version. It used a formatting pallete instead of a ribbon), and I never have to deal with driver installation. When Im on my laptop, I love just being able to plug anything into it and not even think about if it will work or not or where Im going to get the drivers. I also love the "chicklet" keyboard. I loath laptop keyboards except for the macbook (not the macbook pro) keyboard.

My only complaint is that the speakers in it suck.

I am getting a MacBook on wednesday! =)

They are easily the best choice for getting a laptop. I say that because with the MacBook you have a lot more freedom that Dell, HP, Alienware, Sony, Toshiba, Gateway, etc... All those companies dont offer. You have the freedom to choose which OS you want to use. Mac, Windows or even Linux; With any of those other brands you dont have as much freedom because Mac OSX is only supported on MacBooks and MacBook Pros and Linux will have driver issues with a good majority of the laptops on the market.

Plus Macs are just so damn sexy!

OS X can be installed on many non mac laptops.

Don't start with this.

Yeah, they are sexy, I will give you that, but that is about it. You don't have many options as far as software goes. Games aren't gonna fly on a mac. Tons of people are into games, and if you get a mac, you are screwing yourself.

Yes you can put Mac OSX onto a non Mac Machine, but it is not worth it hassel.

The Mac OSX is not as game friendly as Windows but a Mac can still support Windows which makes is Gaming friendly.

As far as software goes it all depends on what you want to do with it. For media production nothing compares to a Mac. Plus with Parallels or VM Ware Fusion people gain the ability to use most windows applications.

And did you forget that windows can be installed on macbooks? I play games all the time on my macbook while I'm away from my pc. Macbook pros have pretty good hardware too so playing games isn't a problem at all.

Yeah, there is no difference. I am not saying that a PC is better, but a Mac is not "far better"

No, steve jobs did not piss in my cheerios this morning. I actually had pigs in a blanket. Anyways, I prefer blunt force over axes and knives.

Both ways are both ways. They have laptops that come overclocked like from ASUS and Acer.

You have tons of options for graphics cards in laptops.

The price is not as bad as paying for the proprietary mac.

This conversation is not going to go anywhere.
