kind of confused with all the new cards out there. looking for suggestions. not really worried about cost, but, is it worth spending $400+ when something<$200 will do?

To put it bluntly, no. Grab an 8800GT and you will be set.

Its all about what you wanna do with it !

I have heard 2 X 9600gt will beat an 8800GTS !

But your mobo doesnt support SLI so I would go with a 8800GTS or if you are not doing anything hard core one 9600GT would be fine . Good Luck mate.

I hear that they're coming out with a GDDR4 version soon

It depends, is it worth playing something at insanely high resolutions when normal resolutions will do?

IMO 1280x1024 is still the best resolution for gaming, because with a 3870 and a decent C2D you can play any game, including Crysis, whereas with 1680x1050 and beyond to get to that level you need to spend twice as much money.
