wow it looks like it scales well in the games they tested in the beginning, i would say it's work it.

And suddenly the reason the 9600s burned them up is clear!

No no. Im an ATI fanboy. I HATE how Nvidia is trouncing ATI in sales right now. I HATE it!

My first video card was a rage pro turbo (PCI) with 8 megs of memory. Ran Pod racer like a pro!!!

And from what I have seen the 3rd cards scales OK in SLI. Heck, u remember that presentatiopn of a tri SLI rig pumping out 40-60 fps in crysis with all settings on very high dont you? Did u see it?

OK, now I need to ask a HUGE question... I just saw ElmikeTheMike's post. How is it a crossfire X2 is beating out a Tri SLI Ultra rig... Why is this happening?

A single 3970 X2 is lucky to even keep pace with a single 8800GTX! Is that not so? And the 3870 can't even beat out an 8800GT. Why is a single 3870X2 beating out a Tri SLI rig? Every performance chart iv seen rates it against 8800GTX, single GPU.

Furthermore, I thought that an 8800Ultra consistently performed better than 3870 X2, and ALSO performed better than 2 distinct 3870's in crossfire!

I admit, Im completely wrong but can someone explain why?

I think CrossfireX is actually a logical, consumer-friendly method of adding the power you desire to your system at the cost point that is right for you.

If SLI revised it's render algorithm to be more efficient and made more effective use of video RAM in SLI-mode, it could be very successful. However, using two sets of 512MB ram to store the same image and data is wasteful, just like Pentium D's with separate L2 cache. nVidia needs to seriously examine SLI and improve it to make it a viable solution. I believe ATI has a viable solution in CrossfireX right now.
So you are an expert in SLI and CrossFire and you have seen the code for both? Give me a break, SLI isn't a gimmick, it beats CrossFire quite a bit.

No one argues that SLI is superior to crossfire. Youd be the first. People argue that the sheer POWER from Nvidia is enough to make up for the problems in SLI.

guys this is my 2nd opost, please dont ignore my one above it, Id love to understand why a 3870X2 sock can beat a Tri SLI, or even a single SLI rig when 3870X2 is mainly made to compete with a SINGLE GTX

I never said that SLI was superior to CrossFire, I said that it isn't a gimmick. Thats quite a stretch on words.

Crossfire 3870x2 = 4 GPU's

SLI 8800GTX = 2 GPU's

Tri SLI 8800GTX = 3 GPU's

Of course the dual 3870x2 set up should beat it!

I want to see one of these 790FX boards with four 3870's running full waterblocks so that they can all fit. About that time Intel should have a four slot Crossfire board of their own so that we can run that same series of tests. Crossfire looks to have way more potential than SLI(AMD, better with memory architecture? No go on.), now ATi needs to steal Nvidia's engineers so that they can come up with a brute force GPU to actually put that architecture to the test.

They had a tri-crossifre setup, too.

I really want to see a non-bias benchmark that doesn't cater to either ATI or Nvidia to really show the power difference. You guys can say oh 3dmark blah blah this and blah blah that. But do you have ANYTHING else that is better that's not swayed by brand optimization?
