Need Help getting 8 cores online - Page 3

What? Doesn't everybody have 8 cores
In my folding dreams I do...

CD, you really should check out VMware and linux distro's. Bal3Wolf and I are hard at work testing a new distro, ubuntu, instead of the ARCH one. One, it uses less memory by a large amount, two it is quicker then winSMP folding, three you can double your PPD, in effect doubling your WU completions which helps for the cause. I can fold x2 WU's with a quad. You could be folding x4 WU's at a time with 8 cores...

It really is not that hard to follow, the guide/walkthrough I posted is very easy to follow, and we have many members who are using it.

We would also like to see how 8 cores folding with it would compare to the quads we have. Are those temps at full load using Prime95 or F@H?

Temps are full load. I only Fold...no time for extensive stability testing.

If I can use your install without disrupting my ability to use my Machine for everything else it must do I'll give it a whirl.

When you install VMware+Ubuntu/any distro, in the walkthrough you set the CPU priority, so when you set it to IDLE, you will notice no difference in your computers speed because your other programs will take priority over FAH.

But back on topic, CD, if you need any other help please just keep PM'ing me. This will be interesting to get going on your skulltrail setup, we have yet to have one use VMware+Ubuntu. This should be interesting to say the least!

Back on topic.

My brilliant solution of trying top run two instances of SMP in Vista failed...lost my 47% finished WU

Getting a communication error. Waiting to see if it reloads and restarts without error.

Okay it started a new unit...hope it works.

CD, what you got the CPU's clock at? Have you had time to test for stability? FAH is super sensitive to stability and RAM timings.

Let us focus on CD's issues people. Thanks!

I would test for stability on the rig before folding or you will keep losing WU's. Also do not change RAM timings when folding@home on a WU. Users have lost many WU's doing this lol, me one of them.

But seriously CD... I could take you.

Just wondering seeing as how you mentioned consoles... Would a couple of PS3s been cheaper and more effective? How many WUs are you finishing a day?
I tried Folding on the PS3 and it crashed

I process at 1% every 9:10 so not quite two a day.

Don't forget I fight dirty...

I have never seen one crash. If you still have the PS3 try again with the latest update from F@H.

Oh, and I fight dirty too. I shower like once a week. (Too much time on OCN )
First thing I did was update it and start Folding and it locked up after about an hour...I think it got too hot. The fan was blowing like a hairdryer the minute it started crunching.

It's my Wife's PS3 so I thought...hmmmm Dead PS3=Marital Strife...
