so was vista your first install, then you installed Ubuntu?

You can run the Windows CD on bootup, then when you are asked to REPAIR the windows installation, choose that option.... then when you're in a DOS like environment at a C: prompt, type HELP for all the commands, but I would choose FIXBOOT.

This is for XP/2000 installs.... I've never played with Vista.

well, the Ubuntu OS modified your boot record....
I'm not sure if it's illegal or not, but if you've got the Windows COA and your own serial # from Microsoft.... why don't you check out some Peer 2 Peer sites to download the version of Windows that you have. I've done it for Windows CDs that I've lost or scratched....

however, if you paid for the software and want an original copy, you can call Microsoft and for about 15-20.00 they will send you a new CD.

good luck

try and borrow a windows disc from someone

All you need is a windows disk to get to the recovery console. You don't need to install and you don't need a key.

Yes that is what everyone else thinks, unfortunately it is not the Case, Even if You Know you CD Key you cannot use a Peer 2 peer Download and use your key.. try an OEM, go to a store like best buy, or circuit City a very kind Employee at best buy let me Borrow his OEM Vista to fix my Friends Pc, then again you could Look for a P2p OEM Cd and Use the Recovey Console....

Yeah, you can, actually. You just have to get the right kind of disk for your kind of key. SP2 disks have a set of keys, SP1 disks have a set of keys, pre-SP disks have their own keys, retail has its own set of keys, upgrade has its own set of keys, HP has their own set of keys, Dell has its own set of keys, etc, etc.

If you get the right disk for your key, it will work.

Run Recovery Console from XP CD and exec
fixmbr
fixboot

Repair should always be last resort.
