OE Q6600 FAN & Heat Sink OK For No OC

Thread Starter
I'm replacing my tired P4 system building a Q6600 Vista 64Bit machine mostly for processing 12MB digital images in Photoshop CS3.
4GB RAM.
512MD2 Radeon HD 3650 512MB 128-bit GDDR2 PCI Express 2.0 x16.
Not a gamer or over an over clocker I'm not sure I need the large elaborate fan and sinks. Will the Intel included blower do OK for what I do?

Well you will manage but i would personally advice you to go for a better CPU cooler. You may need it especially during the summer.

with no OCing and all, the stock HSF should be good.

The stock q6600 fan does its job. it cools the cpu, but not very well. you may experience problems if you dont have very good airflow in your case. i would always recommend a aftermarket cpu cooler, with AS5. all the stock cooler does is prevent overheating under normal use. overclocking is a definite no-no.

My advice to you since you dont game, is to get a less costly GPU. The 3850 is a way of a overkill for Photoshop. I have a quad q6600,4gb of ram, and with ONBOARD on my CAD system, and it does the job great. I put in my 8800gt from myother quad system, and it didnt make any difference with that.

Get something like 8600gt or so...they are around 70 bucks.
I just a 8500gt for that system for 25 bucks after MIR from newegg.

Use the money saved either on a fast hard drive, like raptor..(that is what made a huge difference in my case), or a seagate raid.

The stock cooler is fine, but for like 25 bucks, you can get like a AC7, and get to 3.0 EASILY on that quad. I run my with ALL stock voltage.

Just my two cents

He got an HD3650, not HD3850.

And while I do agree that a more silent cooler would be very nice compared to the rather noisy stock cooler, I wouldn't bother overclocking.

Only change the cooler if you wish to strive for a silent PC. Otherwise, I've found that the stock intel coolers do their job fine if a little noisily.

OK Guys,

I'm thinking of the Cooler Master Hyper TX2. It seems to be pretty decent middle of the road on the cooling and the noise.
I read some about it's installation woes but I am a machinist and will be making sure it will not pop out. I can mod anything.
I'll also be taking it and the CPU into the shop to the hand lapping block using a wet compound and get their faces matched.
I know it's a budget cooler but I will be keeping a close eye on it.

A question on Newegg. They have a 90 day same as chash thing? Is there any hidden charges. I'm waiting on my tax returns and will pay it off but am kind of Leary about a catch. I am chomping at the bit!

With a G0 people here say you can do 3.6Ghz on air. While a 3D video card won't help, a 50% increase in processor speed will.

If you really don't want to overclock, an Artic Cooling Freezer 7 Pro is compact, easy to install, and quiet. Works well. If you need more, ask here. The Thermalright Ultra-120 Extreme (called TRUE on the forum) is a favorite and can take two fans, however it needs to be lapped. one of the vendors offerers the heat sink lapped for $19 extra. This sink comes with a backing plate that reduces motherboard flexing. And it looks cool.
