Real difference between 780I and 790I ?

Thread Starter
Hey guys I have read some articles about the new 790i. I'm pretty excited about the 790I Ultra for the cooling aspect- DDR3 may be cool especially with some of the new speeds shown at Cebit (2100+mhz). I was trying to get a handle on the description of the supposedly new PCIE 2.0 and some other GPU inhancements on the new upcomming board. Can one of you guys try to make it a little more lamens terms please?? Some review basically say that Nvidia took a big step up with the new enhancements from the 780i vs 790i some say not so much??

Thanks as always =)

Nope, just a difference in memory that is about it.

However, DDR3 would require a new NB and my hopes/optimism is that maybe, just maybe, the NB on the 790 might be made on a smaller process, which means a lower temp, which is always good because the number one complain about the 6/7 series NB is high temps.

This comes back to an earlier thread I had made. The cards that are out now aren't even making use of the available bandwidth with PCI-E x16 so why drop your money on something with twice that bandwidth if it won't even be utilized? It's a cash grab as far as I'm concerned...

A way for the manufacturers to capitalize on the gotta have it because it's new crowd.

The only practical (and I use that term loosely) use is tri-SLI.

Because the 3870x2 might have actually surpassed x16, and the 9800gx2 should as well.

Also note that the 790i chipset is actually a redesigned chipset. The 780i was just a go-between with a 680i chipset linked to a PCIE 2.0 chip. The 790i has PCIE 2.0 now integrated into the main chip. So it is a different animal then the 780i (and 680i).
