Making the journey to the dark side

Thread Starter
Well, after years of resisting the temptation...I have resolved to drop my hardcore AMD fanboy status and bite the bullet. Why now?

[1] I have the Athlon x2 6400+ Black Edition OC'ed at 3.526 ghz and STILL cant break 12k in 3dMark 06

[2]At the above OC, Vista still wont give a 5.9 performance rating for CPU

[3]The Q6600 and XFX 680i LT combo at TiDi is too good to not jump on at that price!

So, I am a-gonna do it. I know that the 680i LT SLI is not as wicked as the 680i or 780i, because the LT only supports up to DDR2 800 RAM, BUT as you can see...I am not ready to give up my current ram anywhoo. So here is the specs for the new build...what do you think?

Intel Quad-core Q6600
XFX nForce 680i LT SLI
8gb OCZ Gold DDR2 800
EVGA 8800GTS Superclocked 640
2x WD 74gb Raptors in RAID 0
OCZ GameXstream 1010w PSU
Danger Den MC-TDX CPU Block
Swiftech 350 Water Pump
'77 Bonneville Heater core w/2 120mm
Zalman 8800GTS waterblock
and the new case...Thermaltake Mozart TX

Predictions on OC? 3dMark scores? What do you think?

I predict a 3.0GHz (most likely) to 3.2GHz (not as likely) OC on that quad core because it is the 680i LT board, which is based on the 1st revision of the NVIDIA 680i chipset board layout. Also keep in mind that Foxcon makes the 680i boards for XFX, BFG and eVGA, so the boards are identical! Please read up on the first post in this thread for more info on the 680i LT (pay particular attention to the GTL REF voltage):

The EVGA 680i LT SLI (122-CK-NF67-T1) is basically a cost reduced version of the standard 680i SLI (122-CK-NF68-A1 or T1). There are some differences in the MCP (southbridge) and other features, including the BIOS and memory capabilities.

This comparison provided by AnandTech of the 680i LT and 680i SLI illustrates some of the changes:

Other differences in the LT are less USB ports (8 opposed to 10) and only 1 Ethernet port (opposed to 2).

Ericeod has mentioned the 680i SLI AR and TR boards (opposed to A1 and T1) lack the proper GTL reference voltage modification, making them poor for Quad core overclocking. The LT boards also lacks this modification. Anandtech noticed this as well:

Overall, it's not a bad board, IMO. It has definitely been shown to OC 65nm dual cores with great success. But it's definitely not the one you'd want for OC'ing a Quad Core CPU. I'd go with either a 680i SLI A1 or T1 (model 122-CK-NF68-A1 or T1).
