HDTV or HD Monitor

Thread Starter
Hey everyone,

I'm thinking about maybe getting an HDTV or HD Monitor to hook up to a PS3 I plan on getting. I don't want to pay more than about $900, but would prefer to get closer to around $500-600. Basically, this thread is just to ask if anyone knows of any good deals on them. I want 1080i or 1080p and I would prefer to have HDMI, if it makes a difference? Particularly for the PS3. (First I guess someone should tell me whether HDMI is really worth it or not?)

I will probably have some movies on it, but I primarily want the PS3 for gaming (CoD4, Gran Turismo 5, MGS4, Haze...).

I suppose I'd like at least a 32", but I suppose 27" would be acceptable, and I don't have any limit really on how big it could be, as long as it's in my price range. An HD tuner is not necessary but wouldn't hurt to have... but this will be for my apartment on school campus and they don't provide HD (I don't think anyways), so I don't need it. I could use an HDTV or a nice LCD monitor, either would do, as long as it's good for playing on PS3.

I'm not a hardcore "visualist"/"videophile" who demands the best looking HDTV there is, but I do want it to look decent. I'm looking for the best deal for what I get.

So, OCN... what do ya' got?

[EDIT] I'm considering this, looks like a pretty decent deal:

Well I would go with this

ViewSonic VX2835WM 28" Piano Black 3ms(GTG) Widescreen FULL HD 1080p HDMI
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16824116084

It's within your budget, it's HDMI and does full 1080p

Why not the TV I mentioned? Anything wrong with it?

Not knocking your suggestion, just wanting to research.

his first choice has better contrast as well as it's bigger by 9 inches, and has HDMI and 1080p, I'd say go with the first choice

I would go with the 37". I have a 20.1 inch LCD that I use for my PS3 and 360 that down scales to 1680x1050. It doesn't look that much better than on my 27" SDTV. So I would go with size over contrast.

Go with the Westinghouse. PS3s were meant to output to TVs, not computer monitors.
TVs and comp monitors don't have the same pixel shape (monitors are square while TVs are not), so the image will look a bit weird, and they also don't share the same colors, so PS3 output on your monitor will look washed out, too bright, less sharp and discolored.

You usually don't notice these last few things unless you compare it to the proper thing, though watching movies/playing games with the colors/pixel AR they were supposed to be will make you "feel" a lot better.

(think watching a movie that has lots of artifacts and grain in it... you'll feel pretty "bleh" watching it, but watch a video that is *just* right and it'll be awesome)

I couldn't find a PS3 game screenshot to show you, so I'll show you Transformers 1080p on PC, and on TV.

Source: Transformers 1920x1080, screenshotted on a PC
"on a TV": Same screenshot, resized to 1962x1080 to compensate for different pixel shape, converted to PC colors (looks +/- as it does on a TV)

The best way to see the differences is to load them and put them into the first two tabs, then switch between the tabs with ctrl+1 and ctrl+2. Which looks better?

You may notice that the image seems like it lost height, but it's actually because the width is bigger.

It seems "squashed", but in actual fact, the PC screenshot was *stretched*.
Also, look at the glasses, skin color, and the weird gray haze that was all over the image. The haze is gone, and the skin color looks more realistic. The reflection on the glasses looks much better.

I actually don't know for sure if the PS3 does anything to compensate for this with games, but it can't do anything with movies. There is no reliable way to convert from TV to PC colors without constant annoying brightness/contrast changes and areas that are left too dark/too bright.

If movies don't really matter for you, you can call Sony and ask them if the PS3 does something to compensate for being connected to a PC monitor, or be safe with a TV.

IMHO, a console is meant for a big tv. It just feels that way and it's part of the experience to play on a big TV. Go with the 37"!

hey, that's some good advise.

I would also go with the westy, I got an LG 42" 1080p and it's better suited fro movies and that kind of thing, not so much internet browsing or word, but Crysis looks really nice on it.

Anything where crisp text is need isn't so great but motion or movies, games looks awesome.

Good advice, I think I'll go with that... the TV one looks significantly better than the PC one, although I imagine the washed-out look of the PC one could look a little better if you adjusted it some (unless it was already adjusted to look best...) but I also noticed the width you mentioned.

But half of what I was asking is if anyone knows of any good sales or deals on one somewhere that they could suggest. If anyone could beat $800 (+$50 shipping) for that Westinghouse, I would LOVE to know. It doesn't have to be cheaper, I'm just looking for any really good deals for the size+quality of the TV.

Thanks everyone!
+Rep for all good help.

Hm, what about Sceptre? Is Sceptre a good brand for TVs? On Newegg they have a 42" 1080p LCD for $800 after a rebate. Although shipping is $100... -_-*
