E2200 vs opteron 165 - Page 2

I do agree in your case the performance gain could be 10-20% at most froma an e2180, go for a quad. Try upping your overclock for now. Some more core volts should get you there if you have an opty.

Yes, I believe you'd see an increase in overall performance. I had a 4400+ (S939) @ only 2.4GHz, and upgraded to my e2180. My e2180 does 3.0GHz on stock volts, and when I'm video-encoding, it' runs twice as fast (1hr to encode a 2hr DVD movie w/xvid as opposed to 2+). Multitasking...probably you won't see much of a difference between the two unless you're multitasking 2 or more cpu-intensive tasks at the same time. But since C2D's perform something like 12/13 operations per clock cycle as opposed to AMD K8's 9 operations per clock cycle, you'll see an increase in performance. But it's up to you whether it's worth it for the price, especially if you're going to upgrade to a quad in the near future.

The e2180 even can do 3.4-3.6 with ease on the stock cooler. The temps may be high but it can be done. I have had 2 of them and they both ran at 3.6 with less than 1.5v. There is also the fact that a e2200 at 3.2 is equal to your amd at 3.6+. Don't believe me, get links to downclock and run sandra. Or I can as well just to see what the cache does.

Nor can you searck 'UK' in for sale threads, really irritating.
I use google search and add 'site:www.overclock.net' after the search terms most of the time (no 60sec limit either)
