Wasn't expecting this.. XP x64

post #1 of 17

Ok, I just installed XP Pro x64. I installed all the drivers for everything, and installed 3DMark06. I ran 3DMark06 after a restart and got 7,149 with my sig rig (but my e2140 at stock {1.6Ghz}). The problem I am having is that I got 7,141 with the exact same setup, but with Vista Home Basic x86.. I was under the impression my score would improve with a 64bit system. Am I wrong? or will it only improve framerates in a game and not with synthetic benchmarks?

something is up for sure. I got 13.5k with my E4500 core 2 duo @3.6ghz and my 8800 GT overclocked to the clocks in my sig. That was when I had xp x64

Oh and OT, did you buy your copy of xp x64, if so, where? Just pm me please

Only if games are written for 64-bit code like Crysis. You may notice games are faster instead because it's XP, not Vista.

Well I am not complaining about the score, as that is the score I would expect for my cpu only being at 1.6Ghz. I was just under the impression that on a x64 operating system I would get a better score?

I saw a good ~500 point boost when going from xp x86 to xp x64. Not much, but there is an improvement (usually) even if the program isn't written for x64 bit.

And I saw a darn good 10% boost in CSS going from xp x86 to xp x64

64bit has no improvement on performance and actually right now can be a hinderance, remember that 64bit os's/apps are larger in size and use up more physical memory. but as for increasing performance you won't see any performance increase just by going 64bit, even if the app is native 64bit.

hmm I wounder why there was no improvement from Vista 32bit to XP 64bit..? I will try crysis and see how it does on this new op system. Maybe 3DMark06 isn't optimized for 64Bit?

aw , oh well I guess I will just dual boot XP Pro x64 with Vista Home Basic. Then I can just switch back and forth depending on what I want to do.

There has to be some sort of explanation.... You should be scoring higher than that. You're going from vista to xp, so there's a good 1-1.5k points you get back and then another .5k for going to 64 bit. Did you install your chipset drivers as well? Try using drivercleaner and then reinstalling.

I guess this kinda backs up my conclusion: XP x64 performs worse than 32-bit versions of windows.

In ever single benchmark I tested XP x64 against XP x86, XP x64 scored LOWER than x86.

Super Pi got 2 seconds slower
3D 03 got ~700 points less
Doom 3 timedemo1 got 15FPS (avg) lower

==============

My conclusion: windows' 64-bit OSs provide no improvement for 32-bit applications.
